HOSTED BY WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY

MEN’S GOLF
Prairie Dunes Country Club
Prairie Dunes is an American original and one of the most scenic courses anywhere. You could never mistake pictures of it for any other
American course, although it is easily confused with some of the best of the British Isles. Hutchinson, Kansas - the center of the United
States - is the last place anyone would expect to find a links style course with rolling hills reminiscent of the seaside courses in Scotland.
Nestled five miles northeast of Hutchinson, Prairie Dunes is the hidden treasure of Kansas.
Emerson Carey, founder of Carey Salt Company, was an avid golfer and had traveled the world with his family, playing top ranked
courses in the early 1900s, including Scotland in the 1920s. Carey and his four sons became a staple in the Hutchinson golf community,
contributing to the development of several courses in the area. In 1935, the Carey family commissioned architectural genius Perry
Maxwell (Southern Hills, Colonial Country Club, redesign of PineValley and Augusta National) to design a masterpiece. Thus, the idea of
Prairie Dunes was born.
Maxwell’s response to the 480 acre canvas for his masterpiece,“There are 118 holes here, and all I have to do is eliminate 100”.
Perry’s son, James Press Maxwell extended the course to 18 holes in 1956.
Recent honors include:
Golf Digest 2013-14 – #25 in America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses
GolfWeek 2014 – #13 Best Classic Courses

2016 MVC CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
The 2016 Missouri Valley Conference
men’s golf Championship will take
place on April 25-26 (Mon.-Tues.)
at Prairie Dunes Country Club in
Hutchinson, Kansas. Teams will play
36 holes (two rounds) on Monday,
and finish up with 18 holes on
Tuesday.
Wichita State will look to take home
their ninth-straight Valley title. The
Shockers are the Valley’s highest-
ranked team, and stroke average
leader according to GolfStat. Wichita
State was unanimously voted as the
favorite to win in the pre-champion-
ship coaches poll, receiving all nine
first-place votes.
Wichita State is led by Grant Bennett,
a two-time All-Conference selection
and the 2014 Valley Newcomer of
the Year. Bennett currently leads the
conference in stroke average (71.12)
and has won five Valley Golfer of the
Week awards, the most this year by
a Valley golfer. Bennett is joined by
teammates Jacob Bishop (73.65) and
Conrad Walcher (73.81) in the top
ten of the individual leaderboards.
Bennett finished tied for tenth place
at last year’s Championship. Bennett
is the only golfer in the conference

with a score vs. par below zero (-0.09),
with the next closest being Bradley’s
Drake Bushong (1.33).
The Shockers have traditionally been
best program in conference history,
with 20 total Valley titles, including 14
titles in the last 19 seasons. Winning
this year’s would tie Wichita State
with Oklahoma State for the most
consecutive Valley titles won. OSU
won nine consecutive champion-
ships from 1947-55. Last year, Wichita
State won the title by 37 strokes over
Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois.
Both Missouri State and Bradley look
to pose the biggest threat to
knocking off Wichita State. Both
teams have improved in almost every
statistical category compared to last
season. Bradley’s Drake Bushong
(72.80) and Lyle Burns (73.07) rank
second and third respectively in
conference stroke average, and have
combined for five individual wins.
The two have also combined for six
Valley Golfer of the Week awards.
Missouri State’s trio of Joey Johnson
(73.73), Adam Fisher (74.17), and Brik
Brauburger (74.27) all rank within
the top ten in Valley stroke aver-
age. Johnson and Brauburger have
also taken home Golfer of the Week
awards this year. Collectively, five
Valley teams have won a competition
this year, and seven Valley golfers
have combined to take 11 medalist
honors during the 2015-16 season.
The conference champion will earn
the automatic bid to the NCAA
Championship. NCAA Regionals will
be held on May 16-18, and the
National Championship tournament
will be on May 27-June 7 Eugene
Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Prairie Dunes Country Club first
opened in 1937, and has been the
host for three Missouri Valley
Conference Men’s Championships
(2006, 2010, 2012). The course will
feature a par-71, 6,731-yard layout
for the Championship. Prairie Dunes
has hosted several prestigious events,
such as the U.S. Mid-Amateur, U.S.
Men’s Senior Amateur, U.S. Women’s
Open, U.S. Senior Open and the 2014
Men’s NCAA Championship.

2016 MVC Men's Golf Championship Program

  • 1. APRIL 25-26, 2016 // HUTCHINSON, KANSAS HOSTED BY WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY #MVCGOLF MEN’S GOLF
  • 2. Prairie Dunes Country Club Prairie Dunes is an American original and one of the most scenic courses anywhere. You could never mistake pictures of it for any other American course, although it is easily confused with some of the best of the British Isles. Hutchinson, Kansas - the center of the United States - is the last place anyone would expect to find a links style course with rolling hills reminiscent of the seaside courses in Scotland. Nestled five miles northeast of Hutchinson, Prairie Dunes is the hidden treasure of Kansas. Emerson Carey, founder of Carey Salt Company, was an avid golfer and had traveled the world with his family, playing top ranked courses in the early 1900s, including Scotland in the 1920s. Carey and his four sons became a staple in the Hutchinson golf community, contributing to the development of several courses in the area. In 1935, the Carey family commissioned architectural genius Perry Maxwell (Southern Hills, Colonial Country Club, redesign of PineValley and Augusta National) to design a masterpiece. Thus, the idea of Prairie Dunes was born. Maxwell’s response to the 480 acre canvas for his masterpiece,“There are 118 holes here, and all I have to do is eliminate 100”. Perry’s son, James Press Maxwell extended the course to 18 holes in 1956. Recent honors include: Golf Digest 2013-14 – #25 in America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses GolfWeek 2014 – #13 Best Classic Courses Golf Magazine 2013 – #17 in theTop 100 Courses in the U.S. Golf Magazine 2013 – #26 in theTop 100 Courses in theWorld

  • 4. 2016 MVC Men’s Golf Championship 4 2016 MVC CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW The 2016 Missouri Valley Conference men’s golf Championship will take place on April 25-26 (Mon.-Tues.) at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. Teams will play 36 holes (two rounds) on Monday, and finish up with 18 holes on Tuesday. Wichita State will look to take home their ninth-straight Valley title. The Shockers are the Valley’s highest- ranked team, and stroke average leader according to GolfStat. Wichita State was unanimously voted as the favorite to win in the pre-champion- ship coaches poll, receiving all nine first-place votes. Wichita State is led by Grant Bennett, a two-time All-Conference selection and the 2014 Valley Newcomer of the Year. Bennett currently leads the conference in stroke average (71.12) and has won five Valley Golfer of the Week awards, the most this year by a Valley golfer. Bennett is joined by teammates Jacob Bishop (73.65) and Conrad Walcher (73.81) in the top ten of the individual leaderboards. Bennett finished tied for tenth place at last year’s Championship. Bennett is the only golfer in the conference 2015-16 MVC TEAM SCORING AVERAGES Rank School Events Rounds Stroke Avg. vs. Par Low Round Wins 1 Wichita State 12 34 291.44 6.62 277 1 2 Missouri State 10 30 294.33 7.93 279 1 3 Bradley 10 29 297.03 11.10 281 1 4 Illinois State 10 28 297.54 11.39 285 1 5 Southern Illinois 10 29 300.31 13.41 282 0 6 Evansville 10 25 299.56 15.40 282 0 7 Drake 10 29 301.86 16.21 285 0 8 Northern Iowa 9 27 302.96 17.63 285 1 9 Loyola 10 29 307.89 23.38 294 0 with a score vs. par below zero (-0.09), with the next closest being Bradley’s Drake Bushong (1.33). The Shockers have traditionally been best program in conference history, with 20 total Valley titles, including 14 titles in the last 19 seasons. Winning this year’s would tie Wichita State with Oklahoma State for the most consecutive Valley titles won. OSU won nine consecutive champion- ships from 1947-55. Last year, Wichita State won the title by 37 strokes over Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois. Both Missouri State and Bradley look to pose the biggest threat to knocking off Wichita State. Both teams have improved in almost every statistical category compared to last season. Bradley’s Drake Bushong (72.80) and Lyle Burns (73.07) rank second and third respectively in conference stroke average, and have combined for five individual wins. The two have also combined for six Valley Golfer of the Week awards. Missouri State’s trio of Joey Johnson (73.73), Adam Fisher (74.17), and Brik Brauburger (74.27) all rank within the top ten in Valley stroke aver- age. Johnson and Brauburger have also taken home Golfer of the Week awards this year. Collectively, five Valley teams have won a competition this year, and seven Valley golfers have combined to take 11 medalist honors during the 2015-16 season. The conference champion will earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. NCAA Regionals will be held on May 16-18, and the National Championship tournament will be on May 27-June 7 Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Prairie Dunes Country Club first opened in 1937, and has been the host for three Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Championships (2006, 2010, 2012). The course will feature a par-71, 6,731-yard layout for the Championship. Prairie Dunes has hosted several prestigious events, such as the U.S. Mid-Amateur, U.S. Men’s Senior Amateur, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open and the 2014 Men’s NCAA Championship.
