The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962 and brought the United States and Soviet Union closest to nuclear war. The Soviet Union had placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from American shores. The US imposed a naval blockade of Cuba to prevent further Soviet shipments of nuclear weapons to the island. For 13 days, the world stood on the brink of war as the US and USSR confronted one another. Through secret negotiations and a public agreement between President Kennedy and Premier Khrushchev, the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba and the US lifted the blockade, averting nuclear conflict.
