 Ineffective communication between providers and patients can result in
a misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and medication errors.
 Assessing, treating, and diagnosis appropriately.
 Communication is important to safety
 Misdiagnosis gets publicity
 Compensatory damages for misdiagnosis
 Provision of language services – staff may not be trained or comfortable
to use the services
 Resources may not be user friendly – such as a telephone service may
not be easily accessible
 Organizations need to keep in mind the end user
 Office of civil rights – can only enforce where they have jurisdiction
 Medicare is only covered by Federal law
 Federal rights laws apply to most organizations: hospitals, ambulatory
care centers, behavior health care, home care and long term care
 Funding come from HHS
