2. The theory
Tzvetan Todorov’s theory suggested that all narratives follow a three part structure which
begins with an equilibrium ( everything is balanced). After this there is a disruption of the
equilibrium where something goes wrong, this is then followed by a solution and the equilibrium
is restored back to normal.
1. Equilibrium
2. Disruption
3. Recognition of disruption
4. Attempts to repair disruption
5. Return to equilibrium
3. Applying the theory to Friends
Equilibrium - In season 7 episode 13 of friends the equilibrium for Rachel’s story is her and her
boyfriend in their apartment together in the living room
Disruption - Rachel breaks Joey’s favourite chair and he is very upset
Recognition - Because Rachel broke the chair she orders a new one for Joey
Attempt to repair disruption - Their neighbour Chandler was in their apartment and thought he
broke the chair so swaps his chair for the broken one and keeps the broken one.
Return to equilibrium - Rachel and Joey are sitting in their new chair and relaxing in their
apartment
