This is a presentation I did in order to analyze the key aspects and design of the popular Chinese social media app WeChat, as well as provide possible options in regards to how to improve it.
2. Basic Summary of WeChat
Is a Chinese app made by Tencent
Very similar to WeChat
Boasts multiple stranger finding features
Many other unique features
3. Shake to Chat
Shake your phone
to chat with a
random stranger
Very simple to use
4. Throw a Bottle
Literally write a
message and
send it by
throwing it in a
bottle
You can also
choose to pick
up other bottles
thrown by
random people
6. Look Around
Look for other
WeChat users in near
proximity to you
Start a chat with
anybody
You will also be seen
by others currently
using the feature
7. Computer Synchronization
Can sync to your
computer via QR
code
Chats can now be
made through both
your computer and
phone
Allows you to send
files of 10MB or less to
your phone
8. Positives
Great for meeting and finding strangers
Suits people who enjoy spontaneity
Handy for keeping in touch with friends
and family overseas
Good for transferring documents
Ad free
Is a great stalking device
9. Negatives
Chinese government monitoring
Privacy Breaches
Large majority of users not English
Speakers
App’s purpose is convoluted
10. How to Improve?
Partition the app’s functions into general
areas
Set up servers in the US
Advertise towards US audiences
Editor's Notes
Is a Chinese social media app made by Chinese tech giant Tencent
Very similar to WeChat
Allows you to communicate with people via text and video online without worrying about phone bills or device compatibility
Boasts multiple stranger finding features, will go into detail later
Has many other unique features
Shake your phone to chat with a random stranger who is also shaking their phone from anywhere in the world
Very simple to use
If you feel like meeting someone new, it can be used for that purpose
Write a message in a bottle and send it by “throwing” it out to sea
Chose to read other bottles thrown by other people
Occasionally get a starfish (animation)
Broadcasts real-time location to other people
Its great for making sure your friends are safe
Privacy is an obvious issue
FriendRadar: Allows you to see if any WeChat friends are nearby
Look for other WeChat users in near proximity to you
Start a chat with anybody
Keep in mind, you will also be seen by others currently using the feature
Targeted towards meeting and finding strangers
Can sync to your computer via QR code
Chats can now be made through both your computer and phone
Allows you to send files of 10MB or less to your phone
Great for sharing work documents or small song files
Great for using your phone to carry documents for easy access
More practical of the mentioned features
Great for meeting and finding strangers
Whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to you
Suits people who enjoy spontaneity
Good for people who like random unexpected happenings occurring throughout their day
Handy for keeping in touch with friends and family overseas
Covers multiple platforms and allows free oversea communication
Good for transferring documents
Eliminates the need for a USB device
Ad free
Is a great stalking device
Has GPS tracking as a feature. What more could you ask for?
Chinese government monitoring
Is based in China, meaning that the government has the option to monitor all activities done within the app
They would know where you are, who you are talking to, variety of other things
Privacy Breaches
Nothing new, but this one allows GPS tracking, means that your friends know where you are at any given time
Thankfully it can be turned off
Large majority of users not English Speakers
Largest user base is in China and India, so the majority of strangers you meet are from those countries
Imminent language/geographical/cultural barrier when using stranger communication functions
App’s purpose as a whole is convoluted
Boasts a lot of functions: can make use of the app somewhat confusing
People are used to apps specializing in one function
The fact that this app does so many things can be daunting to initial users
Partition the app’s functions into general areas
This will divide up and categorize the apps many features, makes usability easier
Ex. Bottle throwing and shaking goes in a Finding New People tab, FriendRadar and GPS tracking goes into a Keeping Up With Friends tab, etc.
Set up servers in the US that are operated by a WeChat division within the states
Will minimize governmental monitoring concerns and likely improve performance within the states
Serve as a great way to enter the US market
Advertise towards US audiences
Will attract a more larger domestic user base which will help increase popularity
Important because a large portion of the app relies on finding new people: those people need to be users who can communicate easily with each other
Language and distance barriers will only discourage customers from taking advantage on all the app has to offer
