“Why did you take this course? What do you hope to achieve/gain from the experience?”
I am on track to graduate in the Spring with only elective credits left to take, so last
semester when I was making my schedule a friend mentioned something about the course to me.
My friends know that I like to give back to my community when given the opportunity, which is
probably why Ali recommended it to me. She said it is a great way to do some community
service and gain some experience in a field of interest. I have been pursuing a career in law
enforcement for years now, and I am currently going through a police department’s hiring
process. Unlike some other fields, law enforcement does not have many ways to gain experience
before you actually being your career. For that reason, I feel that this course will allow me to
differentiate myself from other candidates by working within a large police department. I am
essentially taking this course because I believe it provides me with a great opportunity.
Over the course of my internship I hope to gain experience with a police agency, bolster
my law enforcement references and to be more ready than I am now to start a career as a police
officer. In the event that things do not work out with the police department that is processing
me, this internship can be beneficial to me in another way. In November, I took Albany Police
Department’s (APD) open-competitive written exam for prospective police officers. I have not
gotten the results back yet, but if I find out that I received a high grade, this internship could be
very rewarding. APD already gives preference to city residents, so I would imagine they would
also prefer to have people who have experience working with their department. Working with
APD will give me that experience and allow me to become familiar with the ins and outs of their
agency. I plan on giving the Administrative Bureau my best effort in order to prove that I am a
strong candidate for the position and to impress my supervisors so that they will be enthusiastic
to recommend that the department hires me.
