Wes Padgett and Lukas Smith, former high school soccer players in the Grand Valley, were selected to the
All-Region IX South second team earlier this week as members of the No. 6 Trinidad State Junior College men’s
soccer program.
The 19-2-1 Trojans will play in the NJCAA national men’s soccer tournament, starting Nov. 19.
Padgett, a standout wing at Fruita Monument High School who graduated last year, has four goals and two
assists for Trinidad State in an attacking role. He was featured in a balanced attack that moves the ball along the
wings and utilizes multiple goal scorers all over the field. Seven different players have scored at least four goals
for Trinidad State.
Padgett said the Trojans’ speed and space on the wings has made the season enjoyable.
“We’ve been putting in a lot of work,” Padgett said. “It’s snowing here, and we’re still practicing.”
Smith, who graduated from Grand Junction in the spring, is a key defender for Trinidad State. He scored a
game-winning goal in overtime against one of the top teams in the region, Northwest (Wyoming) College, and
he has started 19 of 22 games for the Trojans.
“Honestly, this is the best thing I could have hoped for, to come in here and win the region,” Smith said. “This
whole experience has been phenomenal, and making the all-region second team is just icing on the cake.”
Hays earns All-State
Tyler Hays, a skillful defensive shortstop for Central High School, was picked Thursday for the second team of
the CHSAA all-state softball team.
Hays batted .438 average with 32 hits and 30 RBI and a team-high seven home runs for the Warriors. Hays was
the Southwestern League player of the year.
Hays, who verbally committed to Adams State, will join teammate and Colorado Mesa recruit Kenzie Lange to
sign national letters of intent at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Central High School.

The move was made to boost attendance, assistant CHSAA Commissioner Bert Borgmann said. Golden is more
centrally located than the Air Force Academy, where the tournament was hosted in 2014.
First- and second-round games in the Class 3A state playoffs will continue to be hosted by the high schools.
Other classification’s hosting sites for the Great 8 and beyond will remain unchanged.
FMHS Volleyball TEAM honored
Fruita Monument had the highest cumulative grade-point average among Class 5A teams this season, Wildcats
coach Bob Richardson said.
CHSAA awards the team with the highest combined GPA in each sport and classification an academic all-state
award.
Combined, Fruita Monument’s players have a 3.82 GPA.
“They’re a pretty smart group of kids,” Richardson said. “Obviously they have their priorities straight. We may
not have won the volleyball state title, but we won the academic state title.”
Central Wrestling Dinner
Rulon Gardner, a Greco-Roman wrestling champion in the 2000 Olympics, will speak Nov. 22 at the Central
High School wrestling team’s prime rib dinner.
Gardner is known for his victory over Alexander Karelin, who was undefeated for 13 years prior to the loss.
Tickets are $25 per person and are available until Nov. 19. The event starts at 5 p.m. and will be hosted in
Central High School’s small gym.
For ticket information, call Central wrestling coach Laurence Gurule at 261-4617, Luke Archuleta at 985-8408
or Clint Trujillo at 260-6930.
DeLaHoz, Steinbach all stars
Palisade pitcher Danica DeLaHoz and Rifle outfielder Melissa Steinbach were members of a Class 4A all-star
team softball that played in Denver earlier this month. DeLaHoz pitched two innings and also played in the
outfield.
DeLaHoz led Palisade starters this season with a .442 batting average, 19 RBI and three home runs. As a pitcher,
she posted a 5-7 record with 74 strikeouts and 25 walks in 65 innings.
Steinbach hit .385 this season with four doubles and 13 RBI.
