A slide show about why sportsmanship is important to keeping the integrity of modern sports intact. For a VHS project covering the definition of sportsmanship in sports.
2. Definition of Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is a key part of sports at any level,
professional or recreational. It is like the glue that keeps
sports from falling apart into chaos and fighting. Adherence
to sportsmanlike behavior allows for the game to be played
out the way it is meant to be played. Sportsmanship is a key,
fundamental idea that keeps sports, whether it be
recreational or professional, fair, fun and most of all safe for
all those participating in them. Through the act of playing
with sportsmanship, all participants can have a fun and
enjoyable time playing without the risk of physical or mental
harm.

4. Owners and Coaches
Coaches and owners have one of the biggest roles in
carrying out sportsmanship. What they preach and what
they do during practice and the offseason, as well as in
game, will start to reflect on their players. This can be good
or bad. If a coach repeatedly carries a positive attitude and
never has a bad response after a loss, players will do the
same. The same will go if they lose their temper, or argue
with the refs. Coaches have to lead by example and carry
out good sportsmanship practices everywhere they go so
that their players will do the same.

7. Health and Safety
In any sport, injuries are going to happen. They are inevitable but
what you do to recover from them is what really defines the
severity. Take for example, concussion protocol. A star player goes
down with a head injury and comes to the sideline. You have a
choice, check them for a concussion and make sure they are ok, or
send them back out at risk of making it worse. Player health should
always come before the outcome of a game. Plus, why go out and
have him win the game, but be out for even longer with a severe
concussion. Anytime there is any chance that a serious injury could
have happened, the player should be checked by a trainer or
medical professional immediately to ensure that they are truely ok
and ready to play again.

10. Athletes and Community
Although it isn’t a rule, most athletes will go out of their way to
give back to their community. JJ Watt donated hundreds of
thousands of dollars to families dealing with the aftermath of
Hurricane Harvey. Rob Gronkowski has given lots of Patriots
merchandise to kids suffering from awful diseases like cancer.
These guys remind us that athletes are people to and they do a
very good job of aiding in there community as well as using
their celebrity status as a platform to get across messages that
need to be addressed.

13. Fan Behavior
Fan behavior has long been a very relevant topic of
discussion. Most of the time, a healthy fanbase plays a key
role in games and can boost the moral of the team they are
rooting for. However, fans have been at the root of
countless amounts of “events” that come up in games. On
Monday the 29th, a fan threw a sex toy onto the field
during the Patriots vs Bills game. There have been many
accounts of streaking and fans running onto the fields. Fans
should be restricted to staying in there seats and only
saying things that would benefit somewhat not curse
words or any other hate words.
