2. INTRODUCTION
 Jonathan Z. Maltzman received his degree in Near
Eastern studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where
he graduated summa cum laude. At present, he serves as
rabbi at Kol Shalom in Rockville, Maryland. Since 1980,
Rabbi Jonathan Z. Maltzman has been an active member
of the Rabbinical Assembly.
The Rabbinical Assembly is an association of
Conservative rabbis committed to the strengthening and
building of the holistic Jewish life. Since its foundation in
1901, the Assembly has served as an influential force,
shaping many of the Conservative movement's
ideologies, programs, and practices. Among these is the
Assembly's call towards environmental stewardship.

3. RABBINICAL ASSEMBLY
 With an emphasis on lowering the carbon footprint
and reducing carbon emissions, the Rabbinical
Assembly, in partnership with the Coalition on the
Environment and Jewish Life, adopted an
environmental resolution in 2008. Dubbed as "The
Green Covenant - A Jewish Pledge toward Carbon
Neutrality," the resolution aims to educate and
encourage members of the association to reduce
carbon use in their homes and communities by using
alternative energy sources.
