The College of ArtsandHumanitiesof Central WashingtonUniversity consistof eightdifferent
departments including:Art,Communication,English,History,Music,PhilosophyandReligiousStudies,
Theatre Arts,and WorldLanguages.Thisseparate departmentshave all come togethertospread
awarenessof differenteventheme eachyear.Thisyear’stheme isMassIncarcerationandSocial Justice
inthe UnitedStates. Ourteamdecidedonspreadingawarenessthroughvarioussocial mediaplatforms
and create a compellingvideo.
Mass Incarceration and Social Justice:
Our goal is to spreadawarenesstoall aboutthe injusticesof massincarcerationandracial
discriminationinthe U.S.
We metwiththe Centerof DiversityandSocial Justice toforma partnershipforourcauses.One of our
strategieswastowork togetherwithoursocial mediaaccounts. Since theyhave beenaroundlongerand
have a strongerfollowingon social media,we wantedtobuildarelationshipallowingusto interactwith
each other’saccounts,reinforce eachother's postregardingsocial justice,andinteractwitheachother's
followers.

Excellentoutletsourteamused forthe College of ArtsandHumanitiestospreadawareness,establisha
connectionwithtargetaudience andguestspeakers/leaders,andpreviewevents. Social mediaaccounts
such as Facebook,Twitter,andInstagramallow youtouse words,pictures,videos,andhashtagsto
interactwithpeople notonlyatCentral WashingtonUniversitybutall overthe nation. Tohelpspread
awareness, ourteamposted factsthat are relatedtosocial justice.Postinvolvedstatistics,trivia,and
brief descriptionsof well-knownornotso well-knownrelatedstoriesandahyperlinkforapersonto
followformore information.All postthroughthe variousaccounts wouldbecomerelatedthroughthe
hashtag“#CWUJustice”agreeduponbetweenall social mediaplatforms.

Our teamproduced six individual scriptswiththe creative freedomto make themhow we saw fit.We
thengot togethertotake the best piecesandlinesof eachof ourspeechesandputthemtogetherto
formone cohesive script.
Filmand VideoStudies-
AfterspeakingwithProfessorJohnWard,he saidhe wouldbe able toallow videoequipmenttobe
checkedoutto us to filmthe video.We latersuggestputtingthe filmingandproductionintothe hands
of the studentsinthe FilmandVideoStudiesmajor.Wardsuggestedmakingthisbe aclass projectinthe
future or volunteerworkforstudentsinthe major.
Theatre Arts-
Our teamsetup a meetingwithProfessorJayBall forsome general guidance fromanartistic
perspective of ourscript. Ball recommendedthatwe developthree versionsof ourscript;one that was
veryfamilyfriendly,one thattoedthe line of controversy,andone that wassomewhatgraphicand eye-
opening.He alsosaidthathe couldprovide actorsand actressesforthe videoonce everythingbecomes
finalized.
Moving Forward:
The College of ArtsandHumanitieshasa lotmomentumheading intothe future.Decidingtohave an
annual theme isa greatway to connectthe campus to the College of ArtsandHumanitiesandform
positive relationswiththe studentsandstaff. There isstill alottobe accomplishedmovingforwardin
thiscomingyear.
To continue progressonthe video, the purpose mustbe brokendownsothatwhenthe actors,
actresses,andtheatre directorare presentedthe script,theycanclearlysee theirobjectivestheyare
tryingto convey.Once the publicrelationsteam, theatre,andfilmandvideo studiesare all onthe same
page,progressioncanbe made to finalization.Atthispoint,ProfessorWardcandetermine whichFVS
classis bestsuitedforthisproject.
We have setthe groundworkforall of our social mediawebsites.Itisimperativethisiscontinuedand
the College of ArtsandHumanitiesfollowingcontinuestogrow.We needtocontinue toengage our
audience andspreadawarenessacrossthe campus. The more attentionanddiscussionwe canbringto
the topicof mass incarcerationandsocial justice,the better.
