Jonathan Peters took driving lessons in 2015 with instructor Jonathan Eastwood. While nervous at first due to inexperience, Jonathan helped him relax and gain confidence through demonstrations and coaching him on quiet roads. Jonathan was punctual, ensured full lesson time, and provided constructive feedback. Closer to the exam, Jonathan conducted two mock exams that better prepared him than the actual test, which he passed with a high score. 1. WhenI firststartedtakingdrivinglessonsinFebruary2015, a lotof factorswere stacked
againstme.Firstof all,I hadno familycar to practice on,and thuswouldbe entirelydependedon
my drivinginstructor.Secondly,Iwasinthe 3rd
yearof my undergraduate course,andwas
increasinglybusywithcollegework.Finally,giventhatIwouldpotentiallyonlybe livingathome for
anotheryearand a half,there wassome needforme to get throughmy lessonsandpassthe driving
examquickly.
My firstexposure todrivinglessonswasnota positive one,withmyinstructornotshowing
up,and failingtoletme know(onone of the coldestdaysof the year).It workedoutinmy favour
though,as formy secondlesson,Iwouldhave adifferentinstructor:JonathanEastwood.Having
neverdrivenbeforeinmylife,Iwasreallyquite scaredatthe prospectof controllingamachine
capable of doingthe damage whichpoorlydrivencarscan do. However,Jonathanprovedtobe very
perceptive astohowto helpme relax.Betweengivingme demonstrationsastohow he drove and
coachingme throughdrivingslowlyaroundsmall housingestates,soonIreachedthe stage where I
couldgenuinelyenjoydrivingwithoutconstantlyfocusingonthe fearof crashing.
As I progressedthroughmylessonsthese were the mainthingwhichstoodoutabout
Jonathanas a drivinginstructor:
1. Jonathanmade a noticeable efforttobe punctual forhislessons,andwouldhave always
succeededif notforexcessivetrafficfromtime totime.
2. Jonathanwouldalwaysgive the full timevalue of alesson.If one lessonhappenedto10
minutesshorterdue tounforeseencircumstances,thenthe nextfewwouldcompensate
for that.
3. He employedthe perfectbalance of constructivecriticismandcomplimenting,tokeep
me focusedwithoutbeingeitheroverconfidentordepressed.
4. He wasperceptive astothe conditionsunderwhichIwasbestable to learn.One day
whenI wasstrugglingwithroundabouts,Jonathanhadbe drive ona straighterroadfor
10 minutes.Thishelpedme torelax,andthuswhenwe returnedtothe roundabouts,I
performedsignificantlybetter.
Most importantlythough,Jonathan’sassistance regardingthe final preparationforthe
drivingexamwassecondtonone.Withinthe weekrightbefore myexam, Itooktwomockexams
withJonathan.These were takeninthe vicinityof the testcentre (whichwaswhere we hadbeen
practicingformonths).Onboth occasions,Jonathan’simpersonationof anexaminerwasbothmore
intimidatingandhasherthanthat of the actual examiner.Asaconsequence whenIactuallydidtake
my test,I receivedamuchhigherscore thanI didwitheitherof Jonathansmockexams(the latterof
whichI barelypassed).If notforsuchpreparation,Iwouldverylikelyhave panickedinmyexamand
made an examfailingerror.

PassDrivingSchool to anyone whowantsto passtheirtest
