Most of the sediment on the deep sea floor or abyssal plain is composed of sand and silt eroded from continental areas as well as windblown dust, volcanic ash, and shells of microscopic organisms. The abyssal plain also contains abundant fossils, especially from organisms that burrowed near the shoreline. All of the sediment sources listed in the document contribute to the makeup of deep sea floor sediment.
