2. What are Course Management
Systems (CMS)?
Virtual learning environment
Can be electronic or print based
Formal instruction with resources
3. What types of CMS are available
and what are the benefits?
Moodle, Rcampus
Both are free options
Teachers can manage assignments, projects and
group collaboration
Coordinate with classmates
Coordinate with parents
Connecting with other teachers
Allows for easier cross curriculum projects and
assignments.
Teachers can monitor activity
4. CMS allows students to…
Communicate with other students and teachers
through chats, forums and feedback
Allows teachers to develop course work that still
meets the State Standards.
Electronically submit assignments for individuals
and group projects
Links to articles, lectures and notes
Teachers can submit grades
Parents can log in a check on student progress
and areas of need
5. The Internet has become
a treasure trove for
content related to the
academic curriculum,
providing learners with
free access to thousands
of valuable courses,
information sources, and
experts. (Lemke, C., &
Coughlin, E. 2009).
6. What instructional gaps might be filled
with an online learning option?
Provide individualized lessons for special needs
and gifted students.
Reach dropouts and At Risk students
Kick start the school year by having assignments
in the summer can be used for reviewing previous
material and introduce topics for the coming school
year.
Assignments for students on family vacations
during the school year or missing assignments
Extra reviewing for tests if needed
7. How can online learning modules
support meaningful, authentic student
learning?
Students are using technology to solve everyday
problems during the school year.
The online modules are student centered and
provide an opportunity for the students to learn in a
different way than they are used to providing more
options geared to fit their learning needs.
8. How can we implement CMS?
Offer teacher training
Offer workshops
Instruct how to create your individual site
Collaborate with other teachers on building
coursework
Good old Peer Pressure
If administration is on board require that
each teacher have a site that is actively used
9. What is needed to implement
CMS?
Reliable Wi-Fi access
Enough computers for
each student, either
laptops or desktops
10. In Conclusion…
Course Management Systems is another way to
provide a student centered learning environment
that can also include the parents. CMS will allow
for all the missed opportunities that may happen
during the year to finally be met. If implemented
correctly the learning opportunities and options are
endless.
