Analytics Scope
Grid IQ Insight analytics looks across the software systems used by
the Utilities to manage their electric grids. This includes analytics
from generation through to power delivery as well as data from
the Utility end-user customers.
By interfacing with the Grid Data Management layer at a Utility,
Grid IQ Insight is able to interact with a variety of Utility software
programs and provide value to the many groups that rely on
software data including Planning, Customer Service, Fleet
Operations, Metering Operations, and many more.
By bringing together Utility systems along with publicly available
software, such as social networks and weather data, Grid IQ Insight
is able to bring a new way of analyzing data to find common points
of interaction or influence not previously understood.
An Overwhelming Amount of Grid Data
Due to the recent investments made to upgrade the
Electrical Grid, coupled with several disparate systems,
the amount of “Big Data” now available is overwhelming
and becoming increasingly difficult to manage for many
Utilities. The ability to intelligently store and archive data is
rapidly being outstripped by our ability to process it.
Utilities have a solid information technology backbone. The
core operational systems have always been connected
to the SCADA and historian infrastructure. However, there
are still many challenges, including managing revenue
protection versus customer satisfaction, repair versus
replace, an ageing infrastructure and managing crew
productivity and service restoration.
Utilizing Untapped Operational Data and
Turning it into Actionable Results
The need to develop next level grid analytics is fueled by a
renewed urgency associated with rapid data proliferation
from Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and the steady
convergenceofOperationalITandEnterpriseITtechnologies.
The Utility industry is a complex electrical, communications,
IT and human network. It takes deep domain expertise to
understand these intricacies and to create value from the
large amounts of data the network generates.
Transforming raw data into contextual information,
actionable knowledge and informed decisions, based on
solid evidence and experience is the goal. In many rapidly
commoditizing industries struggling for differentiation,
Business Intelligence (BI) alone has created a powerful,
winning and sustainable business advantage.
Grid IQ Insight allows customers to visualize, analyze, and optimize their data to provide a unified, real-time view of their operations.
GE’s solution offers Utilities the ability to drill down into root causes, seamlessly optimize operations with powerful algorithms, and work
in concert with their underlying infrastructure. This enables Utilities to improve operational reliability and efficiency and to move from
reactive responses to proactive planning.
GE believes that analytical initiatives like Grid IQ Insight are a strategic imperative for Utilities. Utilities must start building the necessary
analytical discipline today in order to support the next generation of operational upgrades and automation requirements. Whether you
want to start with areas such as transmission optimization, distribution automation, distributed energy resource analytics or consumer

GE Utility experts work with you to understand your operations and the type of data you are collecting. GE experts will collect a
snapshot of applicable data and conduct an analysis utilizing the Grid IQ Insight algorithms. Rapid prototyping analysis include:
• Executive summary
• Data review and analysis
• Supplemental data source guidance
• Methodology/logic applied
• Use case demonstration with Grid IQ Insight
• Findings and recommendations
Grid IQ Insight System

GE’s Grid IQ Insight Solution Overview
Data Analytics Rapid Prototyping Consulting
Grid IQ Insight is focused on analyzing and visualizing large amounts
of data from disparate sources to garner business insights and value.
Our rapid prototyping service allows our Utilities to quickly determine
whether a large investment is warranted in a low-risk, low-cost manner.
Once a specific use case has been identified, the GE rapid prototyping
consultants will work with Utility customers to understand the data
streams available. This includes Utility information, such as operational
and non-operational data as well as public data streams that might be
applicable to the use case under consideration, including social media
outlets or climate-related websites.
Within90days,GEprovidestheUtilityanexecutivesummarythatincludes
key business insights. This information can be used to determine better
data management strategies, address organizational silos and surface
opportunities for process improvement. This summary also includes
financial analysis to help present a business case for further investments.
Visualization and Data Management System
Once the rapid prototyping is completed and the customer
determines a permanent installation is needed, GE works with the
customer to set up a private cloud environment within the Utility
infrastructure.
The complete hardware and software system is installed on site.
The application created during rapid prototyping is designed and
put into the production library at the Utility.
As additional applications are created for other GE Grid IQ Insight
customers, these will be made available for all users of Grid IQ
Insight and can be configured to meet individual Utility needs.
The full production system is a scalable, high performance big

Grid IQ Insight Applications: Example 1
Improving feeder reliability through targeted vegetation management
Situation
A major Investor Owned Utility, covering a widely dispersed geographic area and responsible for providing
electricity service to approximately one-million residents and corporations, has a challenge with under-utilized
outage data. The Utility is spending approximately $70MM a year on vegetation management. Given the
geographic variation of the service area, it is difficult to proactively predict where vegetation needs to be trimmed
to protect the electrical infrastructure. Safety is one of the most important priorities for this Utility and it is difficult
for them to quantify the impact vegetation growth has had on the safety metrics. Further, the Utility knows that
their return on investment varies substantially by feeder and they believe the increased costs in some areas are
caused by vegetation overgrowth related outages.
Solution
The customer worked with GE utilizing the Grid IQ Insight rapid prototyping solution. By analyzing Outage
Management System data and Geographic Information System data, including wind predictions in areas with
feeders with the worst reliability, the Grid IQ Insight consultants developed outage classification analytics and
vegetation management schedules thereby allowing the Utility to explore and optimize spend on vegetation
control and target the areas where vegetation growth was likely to be an issue.
Result
Because GE is able to use analytics to identify the feeders with weak reliability returns, the Utility was able to
improve vegetation management scheduling. The Utility and GE are collaborating on more dynamic feeder
segment classification including outage cause prediction and improving the temporal and spatial accuracy
of the Grid IQ Insight algorithm. The Utility expects to see productivity gains and to be able to optimize their
vegetation management spend by focusing more accurately on specific areas that need attention rather than
broadly treating large areas.
Grid IQ Insight compiles data from applicable publicly available systems such as weather information and Utility systems including OMS,
Vegetation Management Systems, GIS, SCADA, and ERP. The information is analyzed resulting in a heat map predicting areas of greatest
vegetation growth and proposing new vegetation management schemes.

Reducing non-technical losses through meter data analytics
Situation
An Investor Owned Utility located in an urban environment in the Southern part of the United States is losing
approximately twelve-million dollars a year due to energy theft and 2% of their overall revenues due to non-
technical losses including those from meters presumed to be disconnected or meters being disconnected later
than requested by the customer.
Solution
ThecustomeriscollaboratingwithGE’ssubjectmatterexpertstohelpidentifyinstancesofdetectable,preventable
energy loss. The Grid IQ Insight consultants utilize the meter insight algorithms to analyze the smart meter data
in order to detect and prioritize the top recoverable instances of non-technical losses.
Result
GE is collaborating with the Utility and has so far identified 15 patterns of revenue theft or loss. GE consultants
have helped the Utility identify processes to eliminate or reduce loss to improve their revenues. GE has been able
to identify areas for revenue recovery of between $5 and 10 million per year for the average size Utility.
Compiling data from applicable publicly available sites such as Twitter, Google, and weather information, coupled with data from Utility
systems such as GIS, AMI, OMS, CIS, ERP, FFA and DMS, Grid IQ Insight will analyze the information holistically. This results in an expected
revenue recovery table that the Utility can immediately use.

  • 8. Grid IQ Insight Applications: Example 1 Improving feeder reliability through targeted vegetation management Situation A major Investor Owned Utility, covering a widely dispersed geographic area and responsible for providing electricity service to approximately one-million residents and corporations, has a challenge with under-utilized outage data. The Utility is spending approximately $70MM a year on vegetation management. Given the geographic variation of the service area, it is difficult to proactively predict where vegetation needs to be trimmed to protect the electrical infrastructure. Safety is one of the most important priorities for this Utility and it is difficult for them to quantify the impact vegetation growth has had on the safety metrics. Further, the Utility knows that their return on investment varies substantially by feeder and they believe the increased costs in some areas are caused by vegetation overgrowth related outages. Solution The customer worked with GE utilizing the Grid IQ Insight rapid prototyping solution. By analyzing Outage Management System data and Geographic Information System data, including wind predictions in areas with feeders with the worst reliability, the Grid IQ Insight consultants developed outage classification analytics and vegetation management schedules thereby allowing the Utility to explore and optimize spend on vegetation control and target the areas where vegetation growth was likely to be an issue. Result Because GE is able to use analytics to identify the feeders with weak reliability returns, the Utility was able to improve vegetation management scheduling. The Utility and GE are collaborating on more dynamic feeder segment classification including outage cause prediction and improving the temporal and spatial accuracy of the Grid IQ Insight algorithm. The Utility expects to see productivity gains and to be able to optimize their vegetation management spend by focusing more accurately on specific areas that need attention rather than broadly treating large areas. Grid IQ Insight compiles data from applicable publicly available systems such as weather information and Utility systems including OMS, Vegetation Management Systems, GIS, SCADA, and ERP. The information is analyzed resulting in a heat map predicting areas of greatest vegetation growth and proposing new vegetation management schemes.
