- My thesis begin with a very broad question, which was what is the motivation for Latinas to be active? As I began researching Latina organizers and activists, I made my question more specific.What is the motivation for Latinas to be active? How do unions respond to Latinas’ activism?
- My question was now two questions. This was due mainly after reading Maria Soldatenko’s research on the garment workers’ union and their refusal to include their workers, mostly Latinas, as part of the union, as decision makers.I also considered the history racism and sexism that was very prevalent in the labor unions in the past.
- I had the opportunity to interview two Latina activists from the 1980s-1990s who were part of HERE Local 11 (now UNIITE HERE). Maria Villalobos and Olga Garcia. Although they shared with me their stories of their most active times with the union in the 1990s, the coversation was dominated not by their union activism, but by their experiences in their home country, the expiriences crossing the border and living as immigrant women in the United States. - Through their experiences, Collins states, women can create their definition of themselves. They did not let their employers, the union or anyone else define who they are. The decisions they made in their home country and in the United States were actions that shaped the definition of themselves. - What I found was their experiences as immigrant Latinas is what drives their activism, their life in their home country and their experiences here is what made them activists. Also, they’re experiences as they relate them to other immigrant workers is what connects them to the membership and brings people out to fight for fair wages, good working conditions, etc. they know what to talk to the members about because they lived it.
