Renewing a Garden Border
We have embarked on the first
phase of a multi-year renewal of the land-
scape along the Boylston Street border of
the Public Garden. This border has seen
many chapters in its history, and today
serves as a naturalistic planted screen from
the busy urban environment, offering pro-
tection as well as selected views out.
We hope you noticed the initial facelift
we performed last spring, when the entire
border was pruned. Our goals are to im-
prove the appearance and health of the
plantings as well as resolve drainage issues.
During rain storms water puddles along
the edge of the path, silt creeps in, and
weeds have happily followed. The rede-
sign will help to keep the water and soil
where it belongs, supporting a rejuvenated
planting scheme of trees, shrubs, and
spring bulbs in this very long and narrow
bed. We are also adding several benches to
give visitors an opportunity to enjoy the
Garden scene from this vantage point.
Our great thanks goes to the Highland
Street Foundation, who has awarded us a
$100,000 multi-year grant to support this
project. We also thank the Phil and
Norma Fine Foundation and the Stanton
Foundation who provided generous
support to the project as well. n
