1. Enjoy continued independence
with Assisted Living
L_Health and Wealth SC02828
You’ll be amazed to discover how much we can do to help make life
easier when you choose to move into an Assisted Living development.
Here are some answers to your more commonly asked questions.
Do I need to worry about any property
maintenance costs?
Within the service charge, we will take care of all communal
areas such as the homeowners’ lounge, plus exterior
maintenance such as repairing drains and painting the outside
of the building. You will be responsible for minor jobs inside
your own home and decorating your apartment.
Will there be trained staff at the
development 24 hours every day?
There is an estate management team on hand 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. Assisted Living developments have
on-site care services which are inspected by the Care Quality
Commission (CQC), and they can provide flexible personal
and domestic care around the clock.
What can I do with the furniture and
clothes I no longer want when I move?
If you’re downsizing to a McCarthy & Stone apartment, this
can be a wonderful opportunity to sort through unwanted
furniture and clothes. We offer a decluttering service and
have a number of charities that would benefit from a range
of household items. There are many benefits of downsizing
including reducing the worry of upkeep of a large family home.
What benefits are there in the location of a
McCarthy and Stone development?
Our Assisted Living developments are built in accessible
locations with local amenities close by. We look to build near
shops and towns, with facilities such as doctors’ surgeries not
too far away, and where possible availability of good transport
links including buses and trains.
How will Assisted Living benefit me?
Assisted Living offers a good level of flexible care from as little
as 15 minute increments, which can be increased or decreased
as required. With on-site facilities such as a table service
restaurant or bistro, and mobility scooter store where available,
you’ll find a range of on-site services designed to help and
support your individual needs exactly when you need it.
What features will my apartment have?
McCarthy & Stone apartments are built to the highest Lifetime
Homes standards with wheelchair access, a modern kitchen
and bathroom with slip resistant flooring. Enjoy peace of mind,
safe in the knowledge that there is a CCTV intercom security
system installed, with emergency pull cords in every room.
What do I get in return for the Lifestyle
Contribution service charge?

standard of service across our development. Within the
service charge you pay, we will:
• provide trained staff 24 hours a day, every day to offer
personal and domestic help with one hour per week
included

If you’ve been thinking about how to best maintain your independence and enjoy a
more fulfilling retirement, then now is the time to talk to a financial advisor. Experienced
financial advisors are there to advise you on what options are available and to help you
make informed decisions about your future needs.
There are no hidden costs or fees for an initial meeting
with a financial advisor. The service is designed
specifically to provide you with free advice and create
a plan for your individual circumstances and needs.
We want everyone to enjoy the benefits of talking to
a financial advisor
• Help receive tax relief
• Are you able to reduce care costs or make up any
shortfall in funds?
• Learn about Deliberate Asset Deprivation and what
it means for you
• Understand the 12 week “property disregard” rules
• Put in place Powers of Attorney to take care of your
affairs if you become unable to do so
Ask a member of the McCarthy and Stone team about
contact details for qualified, FCA†
regulated advisors in your
area. We always recommend that you talk to an experienced
Long Term Care Financial Advisor to discuss your options.
Why use a specialist Long Term Care
Financial Advisor?
You’re under no obligation to obtain professional advice when
looking at financing your long-term care, but we’d always
recommend that you do so.
A specialist Long Term Care advisor is there to look at all your
options and ensure that whichever care route you choose is
affordable both now and in the future, suitable and compatible
with your attitude to risk and your financial priorities.
Your advisor will explain all the costs and risks involved with
each product, and should be able to help with other things
too, like arranging your will or a power of attorney.

Benefits Advice
Most people don’t realise they are entitled to benefits, or are too proud to apply for them.
Figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
indicate that up to £2.8bn in pension credit is not being
taken up, while the total amount of benefits by pensioners in
pension credit, housing, council tax and disability benefits is
£5.5bn*.
As circumstances change, so can entitlements, which could
offset some of the costs of moving to a new home.
Colin Cuthbert, McCarthy Stone’s Benefits Advisor says;
“In the past year I have spoken to more than 800 people
and managed to achieve in excess of £900,000 in extra
benefits for them. If you consider that the lower rate of
Attendance Allowance is worth £2,831.54 per year, and
the higher rate £4,227.60 (both of which are tax free),
you can see how these entitlements can help make
a difference. Plus, certain costs, such as ground rent
and eligible service charges, may be cover by Pension
Credit. People often wrongly assume that if they move
into a retirement development they will lose their Winter
Fuel Payment or entitlement to a free Television Licence
(assuming they’re over 75) – neither of which is true.
And if you were entitled to Attendance Allowance
before your move, you’ll still be entitled once you make
the move to Assisted Living.”
