EVOLUTION OF MAN
2. LIFE BEGINS ON EARTH
The age of the Earth is now calculated to be about 4500 million years. In the early period of
its existence, the Earth was restless. Deepseates forces inside the Earth, and wind, rain and
ice were constantly changing the Earths surface, forming mountains and ocean .
3. THE ICE AGE
An ice age is a period of colder global
temperatures and recurring glacial expansion
capable of lasting hundreds of millions of years.
... There have been at least five significant ice
ages in Earth's history, with approximately a
dozen epochs of glacial expansion occurring in
the past 1 million years.
5. AUSTRALOPITHECUS
Australopithecus, (Latin: “southern ape”) (genus Australopithecus), group of extinct primates
closely related to, if not actually ancestors of, modern human beings and known from a series of
fossils found at numerous sites in eastern, north-central, and southern Africa.
6. ZINJANTHROPUS
1 capitalized : a genus of fossil hominids based on a skull found in eastern Africa,
characterized by very low brow and large molars, and tentatively assigned to the
Lower Pleistocene.
7. PITHECANTHROPUS
Java Man (Homo erectus erectus, formerly also Anthropopithecus erectus, Pithecanthropus erectus) is
an early human fossil discovered in 1891 and 1892 on the island of Java (Dutch East Indies, now part of
Indonesia). ... Despite Dubois's argument, few accepted that Java Man was a transitional form between
apes and humans.
8. SINANTHROPUS
Sinanthropus (from Sino-, "China", and anthro-, "man") is an archaic genus in the
scientific classification system to which the early hominid fossils of Peking man,
Lantian Man, Nanjing Man, and Yuanmou Man were once assigned.
9. NEANDERTHAL MAN
Neanderthals are an extinct species of hominids that were the closest relatives to modern human
beings. They lived throughout Europe and parts of Asia from about 400,000 until about 40,000
years ago, and they were adept at hunting large, Ice Age animals.
10. CRO-MAGNON MAN
Cro-Magnons had powerful bodies, which were usually heavy and solid with strong muscles. Unlike
Neanderthals, which had slanted foreheads, the Cro-Magnons had straight foreheads, like modern humans.
Their faces were short and wide with a large chin. Their brains were slightly larger than the average
human's is today.
