PRODUCTION OF AIRCRAFT MANUALS <ul><li>1998 – Produced first Suite of manuals (AMM, FIM, & AIPC) for the maintenance of 25 B767-281 aircraft. </li></ul><ul><li>1999 - Converted DC8 & DC9 microfilm manuals to SGML documents (AMM & IPC). </li></ul><ul><li>2000 – Added 4 B767-231 and one B767-205 aircraft to the fleet and incorporated in the Suite of aircraft manuals. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This required the merging of 3 copies of each the AMM, FIM, & AIPC. </li></ul></ul>

DEVELOPMENT OF INTRANET PUBLICATIONS <ul><li>2002 – Developed an Intranet site in ABX Air, posted Policy/Procedure Manuals in PDF format. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Discovered very quickly that the PDF formatted documents were slow to open at the client’s computer. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>2003 – Started exploring XML conversion of aircraft as well as Airline Policy/Procedure Manuals. Using ArborText Interchange product proved the concept of converting FrameMaker documents to XML. </li></ul>

GROWTH BRINGS CHANGES <ul><li>2004 – Discovered the Basic Programming and SED scripting were creating anomalies in the SGML documentation. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Created OmniMark programming to not only parse the SGML but prepare, split, validate, quality check content, assemble, and create graphic entity listings. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>2005 – Shared in the ArborText Users Convention in Disney World the use of Interchange to convert FrameMaker to XML. </li></ul><ul><li>2006 – ABX Air purchased 12 each B767-232 aircraft and converted them to the Special Freighter SF configuration. </li></ul>

GROWTH BRINGS CHANGE <ul><li>Late 2006 - ABX Air moved forward with the Stilo Corporation in development of a Microsoft Internet Explorer based viewer for the aircraft manuals, and airline Policy/Procedure manuals. </li></ul><ul><li>2007 – ABX Air added a B767-223 aircraft also converted to the SF modification. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Alpha and beta tested the IE based viewer named JETView (Just Enough Technology). </li></ul></ul><ul><li>2008 – Now with 5 different B767-200 models in the fleet ABX Air has the largest fleet of these aircraft in the world. ABX Air develops an interface with the XML documents for ATOS compliance management. </li></ul>

LESSONS LEARNED <ul><li>Selection of software took research in determining which was the most user friendly for writers to use. </li></ul><ul><li>The decision to use digital manuals for aircraft maintenance was for the good of the airline rather than economically justified. </li></ul><ul><li>Document Management System not required until 6 models of aircraft were acquired. The documents were easily controlled in a directory structure. </li></ul><ul><li>MS Basic routines have a limitation when manipulating SGML or XML documents. </li></ul>
