GOING DOWN THE CURB
9. Goal: Learn how to correctly assist an individual on wheelchair to go up and down the
ramp.
RATIONAL: Wheelchairs are used to transport people who have trouble walking. Using
proper technique helps to keep both you and the person safe during the transfer from
bed to wheelchair.
10. ASSIST A PERSON UP THE RAMP
1. Always be behind the patient in going up the ramp.
2. Give an ample space between you and the patient to facilitate
easy pushing. (NEVER take a passenger backwards up the ramp.)
3. Hold on the push handles and push the patient up the ramp.
If the ramp is too steep, push the patient in zigzag motion.
11. ASSIST A PERSON DOWN THE RAMP
1. Position yourself at the back of the patients wheel chair
2. In pushing the patient down the ramp, the patient should
face backwards. (NEVER take the patient face first down
the ramp)
3. The porter should hold on the push handles and guide the
wheel chair backwards in going down the ramp.
