3. why performance in
smoke control matters
Statistics from the Department for
Communities and Local Government
reveal that 53% of all fire-related fatalities
are attributed to people being overcome
by smoke or gas, rather than dying from
the fire itself. Smoke vents are life-saving
devices that greatly increase occupants’
chances of survival in the event of
fire outbreak.
As well as keeping escape and access
routes smoke-free, SHEVS delay or
prevent flashover to slow or stop fire
developing to devastating levels. They
help firefighters tackle blazes more
safely, effectively and quickly, resulting in
reduced structural and material damage
to buildings.
Essential certification
As life-saving devices, any smoke vent
supplied must be built to meet or exceed
the EN12101-2 standard. This involves
passing rigorous testing against strict
criteria for:
• Determination of aerodynamic
free area
• Reliability
• Opening under load
• Low ambient temperature
• Wind load
• Heat exposure
All SHEVS manufacturers’ products must
pass several tests carried out by a fully
independent test laboratory. Always look
out for the compulsory CE mark, be sure
to obtain your declaration of performance
from the manufacturer and carefully
examine your products before installation.

5. Em-Vent smoke
vents
Em-Vent is a high-performance flat-roof smoke vent, fully
certified to BS EN12101-2 and designed for commercial,
leisure, retail and residential developments and
refurbishments. Em-Vent electrically operated smoke
vents open to 160° in under 60 seconds, releasing smoke
and heat fast to keep stairwells, corridors and escape
routes clear.
Em-Vents can also provide natural ventilation and can be
operated for roof access and maintenance.
You can choose a solid insulated aluminium cover, or glass
or polycarbonate glazed rooflight to fill internal areas with

6. Es-Vent industrial
smoke vents
Es-Vent smoke vents are single and double-leaf smoke
ventilators designed for use in industrial buildings.
They’re certified to exceed all the requirements of BS
EN12101-2. The integral 24V actuator automatically opens
the single-leaf vent to 140° and the double-leaf to 90°
in less than a minute, to clear stairwells, corridors and
factory areas of smoke and heat build-up fast.
They can also provide natural comfort ventilation and
roof access.
All Es-Vents can be specified with solid insulated covers
or impact-resistant multiwall polycarbonate covers to
double as skylights.

7. Es-Louvre air
supply vents
Es-Louvre is a specialist smoke vent for rapid smoke and
heat exhaust from large buildings, particularly those
exposed to high wind loads. Its superlative performance
has been independently tested and certified to
EN12101-2. The smoke ventilators can be supplied in
various standard sizes or custom-built for specific smoke
ventilation requirements.
You can select aluminium insulated louvre blades or
polycarbonate multiwall glazing for additional daylight.

The Em-Hatch is a modular roof hatch, fully certified to
EN1873, designed for new-build or refurbishments of

Es-Hatch is our industrial roof access hatch, CE marked
and certified to EN1873. It’s designed to give safe access
to flat roofs on manufacturing and industrial buildings,
eradicating the need for additional stairways and ladders.
We can deliver our industrial access hatches from stock
in sizes up to more than 3300mm long. We can even
supply bespoke sizes made to measure.
Internal and external locking options ensure high
security, and thermal and acoustic insulation is excellent.
Privacy is assured with a solid insulated aluminium cover

EM-VENT SMOKE
CONTROL PANELS
The Em-Vent Smoke Control Panel allows full control
of smoke and heat ventilation when using electrically
operated opening systems. Accessories include a
fireman’s priority switch, manual control point, or smoke
and heat detectors. The control panel is certified to BS
EN12101-10 and designed to BS EN12101-9 (draft).
As well as its smoke-safety attributes, the control panel
is also effective at controlling comfort ventilation using
room thermostats, wind and rain sensors, or comfort and
key switches.
The control panel is equally efficient whether used as
a stand-alone zone system, integrated into a fire-alarm
system or building-management system, or as part of a
network of control panels. When combined with the Em-
Vent, Es-Vent, or Es-Louvre smoke vents, the Em-Vent
Smoke Control Panel offers the complete solution to
