2. Discovering radium and polonium
Marie Curie discovered two radioactive
elements-Radium and Polonium
Radium and Polonium are radioactive.
Radium got its name from the Latin word
radius, meaning ray.
Polonium was named after Poland. The
place Marie Curie was born.
3. How it helps society
Radium (Radiation therapy) can kill
cancer cells and shrink tumors. But it also
can damage normal cells. Therefore, the
procedure must be carefully planned
before carried out.
Polonium is now changing the world on
how people use drugs like tobacco.
4. Personal Life
Marie Curie’s parents were well-known
teachers Bronisława, née Boguska, and
Władysław Skłodowski
After her mother died, her father could no
longer support her. So she became a
governess
She read and studied in her own time to
quench her thirst for knowledge.
5. Death and legacy
Marie Curie nearly went blind and she was
contracting from a long term illness due to
over-exposure of radiation.
She was the first woman to win a noble
prize. So, she was referred to as the first lady
of science.
Her body (and her husband’s-Perrie Curie)
was buried in Pantheon, Paris. She became
the first and so only woman to be honoured
with interment in the Panthéon.
