Lab costs and their bills are worry-free with Unilab. Not only is Unilab
a Medicare provider, but we also accept any PPO and POS insurance
plans. If it turns out your insurance company does not cover a specific
test, Unilab will reduce the cost of the test to our patient friendly prices.
Unilab does not participate with any HMO insurance plans.
W I L L PAT I E N T S R E C E I V E A B I L L F R O M U N I L A B ?
There are four instances in which a patient would receive a bill
from Unilab:
1. If Unilab learns that payment for services was sent directly to the
patient and not forwarded to our billing department as requested.
2. If the patient does not have medical insurance or opts for services at
the patient Cash Price.
3. If Unilab has filed claims with the patient’s insurance company and
the patient has NOT met the patient contribution requirements (i.e.
deductibles or co-pays) for laboratory services.
4. If your insurance company denies any of the charges that are
submitted by Unilab. Examples: no coverage at the time of service,
not covered diagnostic codes, bad or missing information.

2. Personalized medicine
After the birth of his son, Dr. Cortes combined his passion for helping
couples struggling with fertility with his scientific expertise and focused
solely on endocrine and steroid hormone testing. In the pursuit of
this testing, he moved to South Florida. It was here that he started a
specialized lab called InterLab. The success of this lab caught the
attention of Smith-Kline, now known as Quest Diagnostics, and was
eventually sold. Within a year, Dr. Cortes realized a corporate lab
environment was not for him and left Smith-Kline to get back to his
roots of a more personalized approach to infertility testing.
The rich history of Unilab
The choice to have a baby is one of life’s most important and
rewarding decisions. Over fifty years ago, the founder of Unilab,
Dr. Julio M. Cortes and his wife Eduvigis, were like many couples,
longing for a child and struggling to make that dream a reality.
They were experiencing infertility issues. During that time, Dr.
Cortes was working as a researcher at the Worcester Foundation
for Experimental Biology in Massachusetts–the birthplace of
reproductive science in the United States in the early 1960’s.
Dr. Eugenia Rosenberg, a colleague in charge of clinical trials,
approached Dr. Cortes about trying a new experimental fertility
drug called Pergonal. Coping with the many frustrations of infertility,
Dr. Cortes and his wife were more than willing to try this new drug.
With good fortune, Eduvigis became pregnant after the first set of
dosing. The birth of their son was truly unique and special as it
marked the first single birth born from the fertility drug Pergonal in
the United States. All previous trials for this drug yielded births of
twins or triplets.
Remaining on the
forefront of fertility testing
In 1988, Dr. Cortes continued his quest for resolving the painful
challenge of infertility by starting another lab called Unilab of Dade.
With a well-established reputation in the field of endocrinology testing,
he partnered with the first doctors to practice reproductive medicine in
South Florida.
The lab expanded and Dr. Cortes’ own son Julio began to take on a
partnership role in the lab. Years later, Julio and his wife would also
experience difficulties getting pregnant, only now the resources were
readily available and the couple was fortunate to receive assistance
from the labs’ clients. This next generation couple would eventually
give birth to two beautiful children.
