Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Fecal impaction results from unrelieved constipation. It is a collection of hardened feces wedged in the rectum that a person cannot expel. In cases of severe impaction the mass extends up into the sigmoid colon.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea is an increase in the number of stools and the passage of liquid, unformed feces. It is associated with disorders affecting digestion, absorption, and secretion in the GI tract. Intestinal contents pass through the small and large intestine too quickly to allow for the usual absorption of fluid and nutrients. Irritation within the colon results in increased mucus secretion. As a result, feces become watery, and the patient is unable to control the urge to defecate. Normally an anal bag is safe and effective in long-term treatment of patients with fecal incontinence at home, in hospice, or in the hospital. Fecal incontinence is expensive and a potentially dangerous condition in terms of contamination and risk of skin ulceration

The Valsalva maneuver exerts pressure to expel faeces through a voluntary contraction of the abdominal muscles while maintaining forced expiration against a closed airway. Patients with cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, increased intracranial pressure, or a new surgical wound are at greater risk for cardiac dysrhythmias and elevated blood pressure with the Valsalva maneuver and need to avoid straining to pass the stool.

IMPACTION
Fecal impaction results from unrelieved constipation. It is a collection of hardened feces wedged in the rectum that a person cannot expel. In cases of severe impaction the mass extends up into the sigmoid colon.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea is an increase in the number of stools and the passage of liquid, unformed feces. It is associated with disorders affecting digestion, absorption, and secretion in the GI tract. Intestinal contents pass through the small and large intestine too quickly to allow for the usual absorption of fluid and nutrients. Irritation within the colon results in increased mucus secretion. As a result, feces become watery, and the patient is unable to control the urge to defecate. Normally an anal bag is safe and effective in long-term treatment of patients with fecal incontinence at home, in hospice, or in the hospital. Fecal incontinence is expensive and a potentially dangerous condition in terms of contamination and risk of skin ulceration

- 1. What is IVF? IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation is perfect for couples who are really struggling with their fertility and who are unable to fall pregnant and have a baby of their very own. Fortunately IVF treatments in Australia are subsidised by the government, which makes IVF fees far more affordable. The excellent news is IVF success rates continue to be amongst the highest in the world! IVF has certainly come a long way since the birth of the first IVF British born baby – Louise Brown nearly 36 years ago. Last year alone over 10,000 babies were born in Australia from IVF pregnancies and since Australia’s first IVF baby Candice Reed was born in 1980 over 80,000 babies born in Australia were conceived through IVF. It is rather unlikely that this generation will ever see a breakthrough in reproductive science – like IVF ever again. Assisted Reproductive Technologies performed at IVF centres and fertility clinics continues to grow in demand, especially procedures such as IVF and IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) – this treatment involves inserting partner or donor sperm directly into the uterus). Many Australian’s are delaying having children and this delay can have an impact on the couple’s fertility, these decisions to start a family later in life are often not by choice but they need to have a stable relationship and a good income before planning a family. What is involved in IVF? Hundreds of women turn to IVF centres, fertility clinics and fertility doctors for help with fertility issues every day. There are two types of cycles involved in IVF treatment – Agonist and Antagonist. The difference between the cycles is just time – the agonist cycle is shorter. Treatment involves the taking of hormones to stimulate the ovaries so they will produce eggs; the eggs are then collected from the ovaries using an ultrasound guided transvaginal needle aspiration. The eggs are then placed in a dish with a number of the partner or donor sperm where fertilisation is allowed to occur. Some of these eggs will go on to produce embryos, the embryos can then be placed back into the uterus using a small plastic tube while some can be frozen
- 2. to be transferred later. The embryo then implants itself in the uterus. Occasionally intracytoplasmic sperm injection (or ICSI) is used. This is a slightly different and more sophisticated form of IVF where the fertility doctor injects a single sperm into the egg. This is another fertility treatment perfect if the sperm is of a poor quality. IVF is an option for those struggling to fall pregnant, simply call your local IVF centre and arrange an appointment where your options can be discussed.
