Creating a
Winning Team
“I do not like playoff baseball beginning and I’m in the backyard cooking
steaks,” Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon has said. “I hate that. I want
everybody else cooking steaks while we’re playing baseball in October.”
Maddon’s success with the Chicago Cubs, who have advanced to the
playoffs both years Maddon has led the team, is astounding. Much of
this success is due to Maddon’s unconventional leadership—bringing
in actual bear cubs during spring training, for example, to keep things
light amidst the weight of high expectations. His motto—“Don’t ever
permit the pressure to exceed pleasure”—inspires players’ best perfor-
mance and bolsters their loyalty.
Team building is a critical focus of this issue of Healthcare Executive,
and we’ve brought together some of the most outstanding examples of
leadership in the field.
In our cover story, “Building High-Performing, Highly Diverse Teams
and Organizations,” leaders of five hospitals and health systems share
innovative and practical strategies for embracing and engaging teams
that are diverse in race, culture, age and gender orientation.
Our second feature, “Leading in an Era of Value: 3 Key Strategies for
Success,” takes a look at the playbooks of progressive healthcare orga-
nizations as they seek to improve the patient experience, reduce costs
and enhance population health.
And our special feature, “Improving the Patient Experience: Every
Interaction Matters,” examines the ways in which leaders of four orga-
nizations are using simple concepts to transform care delivery and
change their culture.
I hope you’ll find game-winning strategies in this issue of Healthcare
Executive, which likely will arrive at your home during the World Series.
