5. Wales Activity Mapping (WAM)
A study into the
type, amount, frequency &
distribution of
recreation/tourism
Including infrastructure and
management issues
What is it?
The data is stored in a web based GIS system primarily aimed at Recreation /
Conservation / Tourism managers – wider uses
7. Wales Activity Mapping (WAM)
Coastal activity & tourism is
growing
The need to balance growth
within a protected landscape
Why?
8. Wales Activity Mapping (WAM)
How can you consider or measure policy /management changes without data?
9. Background
Pembrokeshire – expanded to SW Wales coastline initial data collection in 2008 -10
Updating of the data currently to be finalised by the end of 2019
◦ Mapping the Potential Risk to Marine Conservation Features from Recreational
Activities: A Cumulative Risk Assessment
Data collected through face to face interviews utilising pro-forma + maps (time
consuming / most effective)
Data collated in web based GIS system with source/date/contact details
Working Group – PCF / LA in study area / PCNPA / National Trust / NRW / POMH /

19. The Challenge
• Sensitivity matrix data has previously been sourced and
compiled in tabular format for NRW (2018) and NE (2017)
• Spatial data is available on the matrix controls: MPA
features and recreation activities
• The opportunity was therefore available to see how
these matrices look spatially where features and
activities interact
• However it is important to understand there are
assumptions and limitations in the underlying data,
particularly the sensitivity matrices

‘interactions’
Mapping based on:
- Article 17 Habitat Regulation layers
- MPA-wide mobile species groups
22. Progress and Next Steps
• Progress To Date
- Model and input data developed
- Outputs tested with EMS officers
• Next Steps
- Refine method
- Reapply using WAM 2019 recreation data
- Protocol of how to apply for future application to all MPAs
- Potential for a user friendly graphical interface to model
