A journal article describes Retro-1, a benzodiazepine compound that blocks the retrograde transport of Shiga toxins produced by pathogenic E. coli. Researchers synthesized and separated the compound into its S-enantiomer, which was found to more effectively protect human cells from Shiga toxins.
