2. INTRODUCTION
A Thermal Power Plants converts the heat
energy of coal into electrical energy. Coal is
bunt in a boiler which converts water into steam.
The expansion of steam in turbine produces
mechanical power which drives the alternator
coupled to the turbine. Thermal Power Plants
contribute maximum to the generation of power
for any country.
In Thermal generating stations coal , oil , natural
gas etc. are employed as primary sources of
energy.
4. COAL HANDLING PLANT
Coal is transported to power station by
train or road and stored in coal storage
plant.
A Thermal Power Plant burns enormous
amounts of coal.
A 200 MW Plant may require around 2000
tons of coal daily.
5. CRUSHER MACHINE
•It crushes the coal into small pieces .
•After unloading ,the coal is sent to
crusher house for crushing .
6. COAL MILLS
In coal mills small pieces of
coal are used to converted
into pulverized (powder) form.
7. BOILER
Boiler is a device used for
producing steam. There are
two types of boilers:
a). Fire tube boiler
b). Water tube boiler
Here, boiler used is of water tube type. In the
boiler, heat energy transfer takes place through
tube walls and drum. The gases lose their heat
to water in the boiler and superheated. The
escape heat is used to heat the water trough
economizer.
8. TURBINE AND GENERATOR(TG)
The steam turbine converts the heat energy
of steam into mechanical energy .
The generator then converts the
mechanical energy into electrical energy .
There are three types of turbine:
1. High Pressure turbine
2. Intermediate Pressure turbine
3. Low Pressure turbine
9. HP Turbines:
Inlet Temperature = 535 °C
Outlet Temperature = 343 °C
Inlet pressure = 150 kg/ cm2
Outlet pressure = 49 kg/ cm2
IP Turbines:
Inlet Temperature = 535 °C
Outlet Temperature = 340 °C
Inlet pressure = 37 kg/ cm2
Outlet pressure = 7 kg/ cm2
LP Turbines:
Inlet Temperature = 360 °C
Outlet Temperature = 45 °C
Inlet pressure = 7 kg/ cm2
Outlet pressure = 0.85 kg/ cm2
10. ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR
It is an device which
basically removes the
ash particles from the
smoke through furnace
of boiler.
It helps in prevention of air pollution .
It works on the principle that a charged
particle is attracted towards opposite charge .
11. CHIMNEY
It is used to release flue gases into the
outside temp.
13. CONDENSER
The steam is cooled and converted to
water by flowing over the tubes of the
condenser.
14. COOLING TOWER
The cooling water that is passed through the
condenser ,for condensing steam coming out
of the turbine ,gets heated and in order to
cool that water down , cooling towers are
used .
