Overview
Downer Engineering recently
completed the design, supply and
installation of fibre optic cables and
ducting network for ARTNL.
The project included the installation of
a fibre optic network along the
Auckland rail corridors between
Papakura, Westfield, Auckland, Glen
Innes, and New Market.
The work involved the installation of
two telecommunications ducts each
approx 70 kilometres in length, 6
metres from the track centre-line and
at a depth of 1 metre.
Work also included installing ducts
across bridges and through tunnels.
A mix of trenching and directional
drilling methods were used for most of
the route with a rock saw employed to
cut through 6kms of volcanic terrain.
Downer installed 233 pits along the
route through which Downer also
installed and jointed 2 fibre optic
cables (144 & 48 core).
The network now forms part of the
Auckland rail station facilities
upgrade and is carrying information
critical for public safety, station
security and train signalling, all of
which are were critical to supporting
the increased frequency of
passenger rail services throughout
the Auckland area.
The project took 18 months to
complete and has a total value of
$8 million.
