To Whom It May Concern,
It is my pleasure to provide a letter of appreciation for Janie Klapko’s participation as a Health
Ambassador volunteer with Project Healthy Schools (PHS). As a Wellness Coordinator with PHS, I have
greatly appreciated Janie’s involvement with our program during the winter of 2013. She has been an
asset to PHS, which is a school-based program to reduce childhood obesity and its long-term health
risks.
The PHS program includes teaching 10 fun, hands-on lessons once per week to 6th
grade students about
healthy eating and physical activity. Volunteers are utilized to deliver these lessons in the Ann Arbor
public middle schools. By participating in our program, volunteers agree to:
Attend a training regarding PHS lesson implementation (2 hours)
Read the lesson and prepare to teach (approximately 30 minutes each week for 10 weeks)
Take the time to drive to and from the school, set up, teach and clean up after facilitating a PHS
lesson (approximately 1.5 hours per week for 10 weeks)
Communicate with both their assigned teacher and PHS program staff regarding any scheduling
changes or programming concerns
Provide program feedback via weekly lesson evaluations and other survey tools
Janie also attended an optional mid-point meeting (2 hours) and assisted in the “Think Your Drink”
campaign.
We are a program that relies heavily on volunteers and we could not continue in our current capacity
without them! Though they are from varying backgrounds, they all commit to get in front of a 6th
grade
class each week and teach the PHS curriculum. They use and learn leadership, communication and
teaching skills, and they gain a better understanding themselves about nutrition and physical activity
concepts.
We have truly appreciated the time, effort and energy that Janie has been able to provide to us and to
the class she taught. We thank her for making such an important contribution to improving the health of
children as we battle childhood obesity in our region and beyond!
