Title: Student Parking at Olin B. King Tech Hall-UAH Campus
Problem Description: The current parking at Tech Hall is limited to 490 standard parking spaces
and 5 motorcycle-only parking spaces for faculty, staff, and students which also includes 10
handicap parking spaces and 10 visitor parking spaces. The lack of available parking during peak
hours between 9 am and 5 pm is an issue that causes students to be tardy or absent from lectures
and labs that are required for their education. For instance, driving to Tech Hall from the Materials
Science Building on the main campus takes an average of 10 minutes which leaves 5 minutes to
find a parking place at Tech Hall and get inside to the classroom. The amount of traffic is
cumbersome and limited parking becomes an issue when students only have 15 minutes to get
from one class to another. Considering the fact that UAH has the largest freshman class this year
at 7866 students, the parking issue will soon become worse as more students elect to drive to
class due to the weather or other personal reason.
Current Situation:
Blue rectangles indicate the current
parking availability for faculty, staff,
and students which is 490 total parking
spots.
Analysis:
Recommendations/Countermeasures:
-Parking garage at
Tech Hall
-Offer overflow parking
nearby
-Use existing property to
redesign Olin B. King
Tech Hall with attached
parking garage
-Offer transit service which
operates at nominal times
Follow-up:
A UAH ID will be required to enter and exit the parking garage (this will provide a date/time
stamp for data collection). If an ID is swiped in then out within 15 min or less of each other,
that data will be collected and stored in a separate metric. All the data would be used to
monitor parking availability based on the number of cars that enter and exit as well as the
length of time in the parking garage. These metrics will be used to evaluate the total
utilization of parking spaces available.
Student absenteeism or tardiness caused from a lack of parking availability is anticipated to
decrease by 90%. Traffic back-up may become an issue for those entering or leaving the
system between class times. This will potentially affect tardiness.
Goal: The goal is for students to find parking in a timely manner so
absenteeism and tardiness caused by parking issues is reduced by 90%. The
goal is to have a ratio of incoming vehicles to outgoing vehicles equal 0.90.

Inability to find a
parking spot in
order to be in class
on time or at all
Too many incoming

to outgoing vehicles
Only a fixed amount
of parking is

Parking availability
is for students,
faculty, and staff at
Tech Hall.
Students must walk
or bike to school in
poor weather
Students oversleep
Students choose
not to go to lecture
for other reasons
This is a projected average student per
lecture statistic. Creating 560 additional
parking spaces for faculty, staff, and
students will help achieve the goal of
90% utilization of parking spaces,
where the additional 10% remain empty
for incoming traffic which arrives before
a portion of the other spaces are
available while also capturing a 80%
decrease in tardiness and absenteeism.
Projections
4 Assumptions listed as: (1) undergraduate lecture has an average of 33 students; (2) 30% are tardy at any given
time (small sample collection); (3) 15% are absent at any given time (nytimes); (4) 80% tardiness/ absenteeism is
due to parking availability. Where n = 33 for 5 samples

implementing the countermeasures?
-- Represent with sample pictures, tables, cost

specific project
