Turnaround ♦ P&L Growth ♦ Team Building & Development ♦ Lean Manufacturing
Leading talented company skills to change their business performance to improve profitability, eliminate
waste, focus on metric driven performance and improve customer satisfaction.
Jim Marshall’s expertise is working through others to optimize processes and eliminate waste. He has proven to be
very capable of providing this leadership to many different teams, in diverse industries yielding results that have
exceeded business objectives. Jim was able to forge his skills as a result of working with many fine leaders and
teachers over the years. He has learned and experienced the tremendous improvement that can come from
empowered and involved teams and individuals.
Most recently with both Providence Engineering (for a project at ICF International) and subsequently with ICF
International, Jim was able to use his leadership to not only steer a project back to ‘on time’ schedule status, but to
help the team optimize the processes that they were using to review project objectives. The result for both
projects and assignments was project elements being completed on time, as well as to expected quality metrics.
Previously, as President & CEO at Sur-Flo Plastics, Jim led the successful turnaround of this business, leading the
team to return to profitability during the first year of the assignment. Over the course of subsequent years, the
team was able to exceed financial goals and return the company to solid footing in their chosen industry. This
supplier to the automotive industry is still in operation serving their customers with quality products.
Both the assignment at Ligon Brothers Manufacturing as Director of Operations & COO, as well as at Hawthorne
Metal Products (part of Talon Automotive) as Vice President presented similar turnaround challenges. Jim was able
to lead each team to address their own specific challenges with developed solutions improving productivity,
customer satisfaction, profitability and quality. Both teams experienced improved morale and motivation as a
result of these performance improvement results.
The assignment at Modern Tools as General Manager was a business turnaround for this premier mold building
facility (a Division of LOF). The result of the team improvement and turnaround effort yielded a successful sale of
both the Greensboro, NC facility, as well as the Toledo, OH facility to private investors.
The assignment at Walker Manufacturing (a Division of Tenneco Automotive) as Manufacturing Manager allowed
Jim to successfully lead this team to regain their prior position as the most productive plant in the division. The
facility was built with the latest in technology to produce automotive exhaust systems, but had not unleashed all of
the cost improvements that the technology presented. Under Jim’s leadership, the productivity improved
significantly, morale improved and the facility embarked down the path of continuous improvement, year after
year.
Jim began his career at General Motors as a coop student and management trainee. After he graduated from
college with undergraduate studies in industrial and mechanical engineering, and a business degree, he embarked
on a career with Eaton Corporation. As a result of many diverse assignments, as well as growing business
assignment challenges, Jim was able to build his skills in employee involvement and motivation, complex problem
resolution, team building, project management, the elimination of waste, as well as the ability to lead teams and
personnel to successfully solve various complex, business challenges for themselves. Once they learned the power
that they now developed - to face a business challenge together, they were able to repeat this success over time
and grow stronger as an organization – and as a team.
