In early September 2010 C-MAR
Asia was involved in conducting
sea trials for China Oilfield
Services’ new Semi-Submersible
Drilling Platform the ‘COSL
Pioneer’. This is the first time C-
MAR Asia was involved in
conducting such large scale trials.
The COSL Pioneer is equipped
with state of the art drilling and
dynamic positioning (DP3) systems
and is the first deep-water semi-
submersible drilling platform
constructed in China. She is
classed by DNV and has an overall
length of 104.5 metres, width of 65
metres and depth of 36.85 metres.
It has a design draught of 9.5 -
17.75 metres and a displacement
of 27,331 - 36,402 tonnes. The
platform has a design life of 20
years and can accommodate up to
120 personnel. This rig is fitted with
six (6) 3.8MW at 720rpm, variable
speed azimuth thrusters. The
azimuth thruster is of the type
Wartsila FS3500-671NU Fixed
Pitch and is driven by a 4026V E-
motor with a capacity of 3.8MW
through a Siemens variable
frequency drive (VFD).
The sea trial was the last major
milestone before the platform is to
be delivered. James Li and CH
Leong, our Electrical Consultant
THE NEWSLETTER OF C-MAR GROUP September 2010 ISSUE 17
and Engineer based in Singapore
office attended the sea trial on
behalf of C-MAR and were involved
in performing FMEA tests on DP
related systems onboard the
platform.
FMEA in progress – showing C-
MAR’s James Li and CH Leong
During the sea trial, “Typhoon
Kompasu” hit the Yellow Sea but
fortunately, COSL Pioneer received
warning on the typhoon and
avoided it. There was a slight delay
in the schedule but the team spirit
of all parties remained very high. All
the parties were very cooperative
and gave their best to complete the
sea trials successfully. Although
there were some issues during the
FMEA proving test, the vendors
and yards were very focused and
co-ordinated in resolving the issues
in order to fulfil the requirements.
After four hectic days, James and
CH Leong completed the FMEA
proving test ahead of schedule.
Without the co-operation from all
parties, the FMEA proving test
would not have been completed
successfully.
After completing the FMEA proving
test, representatives from COSL,
Mr. Rune Forselv (Commissioning
Manager), CIMC Raffles, Mr. Yan
Yong Jun (Sea Trail Manager) and
DNV Mr. Thomas Lo (DNV Site
Manager) expressed their great
satisfaction on the outcome of the
DP FMEA proving trial and
commented highly on James and
his team’s performance, specifically
in “technical know how” and “co-
ordination & conflict resolution
skill”. They expressed their wish
that C-MAR Asia will continue to
work with them in future projects.
