Masterplanning
James Blake Associates saves developers massive sums of
money through experienced strategic landscape expertise.
Strategic planning of adoption can facilitate the use of money
saving drainage approaches using SUDS previously unadoptable.
James Blake Associates links with OASIS land and management
solutions, which means SUDS installations can get adopted.
By planning open space in the right places with the optimum
length of interface with the development as possible will ensure
maximum values for those buildings, especially residential ones.
Natural play is a recent new approach which looks at open space
as a playable entity with a play focus, not needing any separate
land take for play specifically. This strategy can increases the
net developable area.
James Blake Associates can prepare environmental statements
either as co-ordinators but most often as specialists carrying out
Ecological Impact Assessments and Landscape and Visual Impact
Assessments. We can advise clients on the need for EIA and
recommend the appointment of other specialist consultants as
appropriate.

James Blake Associates is able to assess sites for
their green constraints, surveys that assist our clients
with their land purchase. We work closely with a firm
called Intelligent Land, which can evaluate optimum
development strategies, analyse the development
potential of sites, and together we can inform
representations for the allocation of sites through the
LDF/ Local Plan. We can also help prepare the green
pages for site specific development briefs.
James Blake Associates’ landscape and visual
appraisals (LVA’s) and townscape assessment
methodology uses current guidelines, informing
and justifying development layout options,
and recommending practical and cost effective
environmental strategies. The LVA can be extended to
assess impact (LVIA), once the layout is certain. We flag
any potential conflicts between our firm and others,
or between landscape and other environmental and
infrastructural constraints to ensure no failure
of planning is caused through such things.

and soft landscape detailing is a
key strength of the practice: Weekly
CPD training on planting design and
hard landscape detailing, ensures team members
are up to date with latest trends and materials.
This strength and knowledge base provides a platform for innovation and
exploring new ways of doing things that are faster, better and lower cost.
Planting for impact is a key training CPD session repeated regularly, so team
members obtain a deep understanding of how to achieve context appropriate
successful schemes, with available and cost effective plant materials. Hard
landscape detailing is about getting the right character, function and cost.
All key and continuous training areas for the team.

At James Blake Associates, our plans are clear
and thorough: 25 years of contract supervision
and implementation experience, has ensured
that common construction errors are
minimised by ensuring clear notes, details and
instructions on the drawings. The 3 letter code
allows a high level of detail to be achieved in
the tight space available on the plan and yet
clear indication of species without looking up
the code. The planting distances of shrubs and
trees from buildings are all on a layer and in
the schedule, so there are no conflicts.
15. 13
James Blake Associates offers a comprehensive
tree & hedgerow appraisal service: This includes:
A) pre-planning Work:
An accurate CAD-based tree surveys, (extra over
for tree tagging), with tree constraints plan and
detailed report. The report includes information on
the condition and BS category of each tree, possible
safe useful life expectancy, age, height, amenity
value and any surgery works required.

B) Planning:
Layout supportive information will Include a tree protective
measures included on the plan (including fencing and construction
methodology for surfacing within the Root Protection Area (RPA).
The tree survey information can be imported into the landscape
scheme as a CAD layer. A report will accompany Tree Protection
Plan: This is called an Arboricultural Implications Assessment (AIA).
In addition to the AIA, will be an Arboricultural Method Statement
(AMS), detailing how the trees on site will be protected.
C) Post Planning:
On site monitoring of the tree protection methodology is often
required to ensure the existing tree stock on a development site
is adequately protected and clients kept free from delaying and
expensive prosecutions and enforcement action.
Our Advantage
Benefits include:
„„ Accurate CAD based tree surveys/drawings
„„ Rapid response to your tree survey needs
„„ Cost effective even when urgent
„„ Reliable and well resourced team
„„ Countrywide service but not at an additional cost
„„ Excellent working relationships with tree officers
„„ General advice to clients on tree issues provided free of charge
Tree protection barriers are essential to ensure the survival of trees
on development sites. Such fencing prevents damage to the main
stem of the tree and provide important protection to the roots and
17. 15
surrounding ground. Protecting the RPA is necessary to avoid
compaction and damage to the root system. Compaction
can harm trees, possibly rendering them unstable and liable
to wind throw, a health and safety issue presenting a risk to
contractors and end users alike.
A CAD based tree protection plan is clear and easy to
read, with appropriate British Standard classification,
tree protection barriers, and special construction
methods as required for each specific site.
Comprehensive
tree survey service
Arboricultural Implication Assessments and
method statements help to ensure the site
retains its genius loci, which saves trees and
this saves a lot of money.
By employing our arboricultural services
clients benefit from rapid professional advice
and a quick response and turnaround times
on key development deliverables.
Tree retention is an effective way of
reducing the environmental impact of
development, but ultimately improves
sales and saves a lot of money on
landscape proposals.

Ecology
James Blake Associates offers
specialist ecological services. Our
highly qualified and experienced
Ecologists are on hand to provide
valuable and practical advice on a
range of ecological issues.
Demand for development land in the
Uk is increasing. Many developers are
looking for potential sites to build on.
Some areas may contain wildlife and
habitats that are protected under
local, national or European legislation.
There are increasingly serious
repercussions of seeking planning
permission without consulting a
qualified ecologist to first evaluate
the site and surrounding area for
protected species.
We can help developers plan ahead
to prevent financial loss, significant
delays in construction, or criminal
prosecution.

Phase 1 Habitat surveys
The standard method for habitat surveying, involving
mapping the extent and quality of wildlife habitats.
Extended Phase 1 Habitat surveys
Uses target notes to identify areas of interest and highlight
any necessary further survey work for protected species.
This survey is especially useful for developers. Early
identification of protected species on a site can save
months, and sometimes years, of lost construction time.
Hedgerow surveys
James Blake Associates offers an accurate hedgerow
survey, which determines the importance of hedges and
assesses their value under the Hedgerow Regulations
1997. In conjunction with our landscape architects and
arboriculturists, we are able to provide a comprehensive
habitat creation, restoration and management service.
Also provided:
„ Phase II survey (national vegetation classification).
„ Surveys for Code for Sustainable Homes / BREEAM

LandmARC
LandmARC
LandMaRC
LandmARC is a landscape design tool conceived and
developed in house. The programme enables the user
to accurately detail hard and soft landscape elements
and measure and cost all soft works.
The programme is used through AutoCAD for all
landscape working drawings, including tagging and
labelling, to produce plant schedules and cost estimates.
The programme features a number of shortcut buttons
for easy integration and use with AutoCAD.
WhY landmArC?
User friendly: Works in a similar way to AutoCAD, hence
very few new skills are needed to use LandmARC.
It is easy to use even for absolute beginners.
Speed: LandmARC is fast as there are no complex
databases to search through. This software is
developed by landscape professionals for landscape
professionals.
24. 22
Accurate tagging
and labelling
Tagging: LandmARC can accurately measure planting
beds, hedges and other landscape elements using a
tagging system. This provides the user with area and
unit quantities in addition to the total plant numbers
for each species.
Layers: There are a number of standard layers used by
LandmARC, including three private layers (for tags
and NHBC Regulations clause 4.2“Building near Trees”).
These layers can be turned off for printing purposes
and ensures you can check trees are at the right
distance from buildings and check individual area
measurements.
The NHBC layer: When new trees are added to a
drawing with the NHBC definition of the influence
zone for standard minimum foundation depths,
it is shown clearly as a purple line. This enables
users to select trees that will not affect foundations
(avoiding the need for expensive deepening) unless
it is necessary for design or planning reasons, when
affected houses can be clearly identified.
Clarity: Plant name abbreviations ensure our planting
plans are as clear and easy to read as possible.
The three character per name Method ensures easy
recognition of Plant names, being long enough to be
phonetic so clients, local authorities and contractors
can understand the design.
Public and private: Users can differentiate between
private and public areas by using the two different
tag settings, aiding cost estimating.
Quality plan production
James Blake Associates’ landscape plans convey a
large amount of detailed design information in a clear
and legible way. These plans function as:
Presentation drawings by being visually appealing to
our clients, planners and landscape officers.
Working drawings by conveying the necessary
technical information to clients, engineers and
contractors, enabling the successful translation of our
designs from“plan”to the“ground.”
25. 23
user interface
Users of LandmARC have access to A large amount of
ever-growing data available at the designers’fingertips.
The programme fully integrates with CAD and is therefore
compatible with clients’drawings. The user develops an
intuitive and quick approach to using LandmARC.This
is achieved by using AutoCAD technology e.g. toolbars,
menu dropdowns and tool palettes.
LandmARC is an AutoCAD-derived drawing
and measuring tool designed specifically for the
conveying of landscape design information whilst
measuring, scheduling and cost estimating the
design data. LandmARC is being developed
continually, improving the packages usability,
the quality of the drawings produced and the
accuracy and flexibility of its measuring function.
Intuitive and quick
CAD Standards
Digital information in our drawings is clearly
organised. For example, in terms of layer
management and line widths, CAD allows our
drawings to be shared internally and externally.
It ensures that anyone familiar with CAD can
easily read and work with our digital drawings.
28. 26
Tayfen Meadows
Tayfen Meadows, (previously a caravan site and derelict
greyhound track), was designed as a comprehensive
development of 170 houses, including significant areas of
public open space. The residential area is formed by a
permeable network of roads and footpaths with each
dividing perimeter blocks of houses defining and enclosing
the street. Parking is contained to the rear of the dwellings
in private courts.
Gaps in the street and carriage archways provide access into
informal parking courtyards. These hard landscape dominated
spaces are softened by the use of bound gravel surfacing
and edgings. Planting of trees in the paving and within
rear gardens in addition to the use of climbing shrubs were
designed to soften walls and fences.
A watercourse runs through the development. The banks,
retained by gabions and the stream-side areas are planted with
a variety of ornamental and native species, provide a unique
feature and focus.
30. 28
Queen Mary and
Westfield College
Queen Mary and Westfield College advertised a
competition brief to redesign the entrance to the
college. The existing entrance was badly designed
and did not reflect the contemporary fresh character
of the College buildings. James Blake Associates
approached the design with a simple concept that
would unify and link the space to the building.

Whitbread Dartford
James Blake Associates has been appointed to
provide Landscape Architecture, Ecological and
Arboricultural consultancy services to Whitbread plc.
The group includes Premier Travel Inn, Brewers Fayre,
Beefeater and Table Table brands. We have completed
landscape schemes for in excess of 50 individual
sites. Whilst the majority are new build schemes or
improvements to existing sites, they have included
a challenging range of different projects, including
seafront locations at Portishead and the Isle of White,
parkland settings such as Barking Lido and canal fronts,
for example Bluebricks, Wolverhampton.
33. 31
parks/open spaces
Coes Meadow
Coes Meadow was a millennium
funded green space. A proactive
Parish Council ensured funding
and a clear brief for this rural village
green setting. The character of the
space is informal and the facilities
conceived very much in a country
park tradition, of water bound
paved paths, rustic play items and
sweeping wildflower meadows
with areas of amenity grass for
more active ball games.
Existing tree management,
including an historic avenue of
lime trees, was part of the brief,
as was the proposal of further
village green, canopy height trees.
The client was very satisfied
with the results and it is well
maintained to this day.
34. 32
Flaktwoods
Flaktwoods was the name
for the former industrial
site, which became a major
development site for 750
new homes and associated
open spaces.
The play area had a number
of key constraints, steep
slope, closely overlooked
space, poor drainage and
dovetailing with the work
of an artist separately
commissioned.
James Blake Associates
used natural play principles
to create an innovative play
environment – suitable for
inspiring the imagination
of children, allowing role
lay, adventure and physical
challenge, and yet with no
unsafe elements. Green guide
A+ Smart Seats were used for
the social area, these being
made from recycled chip fat,
and very cost effective.
36. 34
commercial/industrial/retail
Tesco Tiptree
When one thinks of retail carp parks, you think of
boring planting in green dominated mixes of small
leaved ground cover plants. We wanted to break the
mould. Add colour, contrast and interest: The planting
has proven highly successful and is strikingly different
and better than most retail schemes. It reflects the
colours and contrasts within the store. Why should car
parks be dull, and full of trampled green ground cover
shrubs? At James Blake Associates we think differently.
The results we think – speak for themselves. This is
without increased cost and maintenance either. We
believe in better but at lower cost: That’s the essence
of our value-innovation approach.
37. 35
HISTORIC restoration & gardens
McKenna - Coxtie House,
Brentwood
James Blake Associates designed the grounds to Coxtie House,
a large Georgian style country house with 8 acres of grounds and
gardens on behalf of a private client.
The scheme included the substantial
restoration and redesign of 4 acres of
gardens including creation of a walled
vegetable garden, pavillion, croquet
standard lawn and parkland.
James Blake Associates administrated the
contract and implementation of the works.
38. 36
HOSPITALS
Nuffield Hospital, Bury St. Edmunds
James Blake Associates was appointed to provide a scheme for
environmental improvements to the extension of the Nuffield Hospital,
Bury St. Edmunds, including a fire pond. The size of the pond was
determined by the volume of water needed in case of a fire.
The brief was to design an attractive space
with minimum maintenance cost as well as
to stabilise a 1.5m change in level.
We implemented the design with a nominated
Landscape Contractor working through the
building firm Carter, under JCT 80 contract.
39. 37

St. Anne’s Square,
Bury St. Edmunds
James Blake Associates undertook the hard and soft landscape
design, tender process and contract administration.
Re-design of a private garden creating separate garden rooms
using ornamental shrub and herbaceous planting to define
spaces and adding all year round interest. Particular emphasis
was given to the use of interesting foliage forms, colours and
textures while ensuring that the planting scheme remained
easy to maintain.

cemeteries & crematoria
Garden of England
Crematorium,
Sittingbourne
James Blake Associates was appointed to the London
Crematorium Company to design a masterplan in
conjunction with Hugh Thomas (architect) for a new
crematorium.
The scheme included the crematorium, access drive
and parking areas, memorial gardens, a lake and
native structural planting including woodland, scrub,
glades and wildflower meadows to create an informal
and reflective setting and provide a transition to the
surrounding rural landscape.
The planting was implemented in three phases, with
the final phase comprising planting surrounding the
crematorium building and the formal garden areas.
James Blake Associates We contract administrated
the planting works on behalf ofthe client.
The Garden of England Crematorium was completed
in 2005.
