Epic East Africa Expedition Through 4 Countries and Iconic Landscapes
1. 1
East Africa Expedition
with BlueRhino 4x4
Safaris
Four countries:
(and six Covid tests)
• South Africa
• Botswana
• Zambia
• Tanzania
c.10,000 km in 4.5 weeks
Music: Carmen Twillie, Lebo M. Circle Of Life
2. 2
Leaving Irene in
Gauteng at the start of
the expedition
somewhat nervous,
check list and
planning (hopefully)
done but very excited
and all looking so
clean
3. 3
Our first and last
stop was at The Big
Fig Inn close to the
Martins Drift
border between
South Africa and
Botswana
On the way back, we were the only campers at the site. This was going to be a
common occurrence on our trip due to Covid-19.
17. 17
Shiwa Ngandu House, built in the 1920’s by Sir Stewart Gore-Browne
Kapishya … has fascinating history as
well as great natural beauty
The old clock tower
18. 18
Also stopped at The
Kings Highway on
the way there and
back, which is close
to the border with
Tanzania
19. 19
The last 40km
from The Kings
Highway to the
Tunduma
border with
Tanzania on the
‘main’TanZam
Highway is
simply
atrocious:
mixed tar and
gravel with
deep potholes
and much
traffic
20. 20
The ‘one stop’
border at Tunduma
was also most
efficient but time
consuming chiefly
due to Interpol
taking their time on
clearing the
vehicles so we
witnessed a
magnificent sunset
as we travelled
north to Lake
Tanganyika on a
magnificent road, a
gift from the people
of the USA
21. 21
Lake Shore on Lake Tanganyika … almost a piece of heaven
Note the high water level due to the recent heavy rainfall
25. 25
Coffee stop en route
Then onto Tabora
Our overnight lodgings,The Orion Tabora hotel: very special
Dr David Livingstone and Queen Elizabeth II visited
this hotel … and also the town where my good
friend Gerard de La Vallee Poussin was born
26. 26
Kwatunza Beachland at Mwanza, Lake Victoria, our most northerly camp
Camping in the car park as the water level on Lake
Victoria was very high
27. 27
Another one …
The dust cloud in the background is the volcanic
ash from a very recent eruption of Mount
Nyiragongo 600km west in the DRC
Kwatunza Beach …
28. 28
The Serengeti … the highlight of the expedition and the main reason why embarked
on this expedition
44. 44
Birthday dinner for James!
Mesarani Snake Park, an unexpected gem
The camp is run by a wonderfully vibrant 70+ year old
widow previously from Durban
45. 45
Mesarani Snake Park …
We managed two
car and caravan
washes on tour as
everything
(amazingly aside
from the inside of
the van) was just
full of dust
54. 54
View from our hotel restaurant
Zanzibar, the spice island
First class travel on the hydrofoil
55. 55
In 1998 whilst on a work trip with De Beers to visit the Williamsons (Mwadui) diamond mine I took a day to visit Zanzibar. It was
the day of my father's ordination so I went to the Anglican cathedral in Stone Town to say a prayer for him. Did the same on this
trip but this time around they wanted money to enter the church. Reminds me a little of Jesus and the money changers.....
Zanzibar, the spice island …
56. 56
Birthplace of the legend Freddie Mercury
Zanzibar, the spice island …
Our local guide describing one of the many fascinating doors in Stone Town
57. 57
Team photo following a great spice and fruit tour, along with our guides
Zanzibar, the spice island …
58. 58
Sadly, no photos of the camp site at Kisolanza Old Farmhouse in Tanzania as we arrived after dark following a 13 hr drive from
Dar es Salaam and left early again in the morning for the border with Zambia. The photos above are from theTanZam Highway
close to a village called Kidai not too far from Iringa. Magnificent scenery and a spectacular baobab forest.
Iringa

A huge thank you to
Chris van Niekerk of
BlueRhino 4x4 Safaris for
leading the expedition and
being such a gracious host
Safely back home, 4.5 weeks and c.10,000 km later
My gratitude too to Toyota and Echo 4x4,
both of Centurion, for making and servicing
my rig and being ‘up to’ Africa!
