Terrorism in Orlando
SOCI101
On the eve of June 12, 2016 Omar Mateen who was a 29 Year Old Male, Killed
49 people and injured 53. This was considered by many to be a hate crime on gays but an
act of terrorism it was. Although It is a little shaky to figure out if this was a terrorist
attack by isis or self rejectionfrom a self loathing gay male there are still many theories
out there to why this may have taken place. Later that eve he was shot and killed by the
Orlando Police Department after a three hour stand-off had taken place. Before The
shooting had even taken place though Mateen had swore allegiance to ISIS (A radical
islamic terror organization) and then Proceededto shoot up the club. The Club he shot
was called Pulse Night Club and that night it was Latin Night and most to all of the club
was in the LGBT community. Isis Claimed that the shooting was a retaliation to the
killing of a member named Abu Waheeb. This was considered to be one of the most
deadly attacks in United States History besides 9-11. Attacks like this destroy the heart
of the nation. It takes months even years to recover to a travesty such as this . We lose
our personal liberty as a result to these deadly terror attacks such as 2nd Amendment
2. rights , a president who wants to close our borders , and just the plain fear of being safe in
daily life.
Within 24 hours of the attacks it sparked a debate between Democrats and
Republicans about gun control. The Democrats were heavily in favor in lobbying for
newer gun regulations while the republicans were more in favor of keeping gun laws in
place but dealing with the problems head on. President Elect Donald Trump after the
shootings declared that he would pass laws for heavier vetting of islamic immigrants and
refugees. While on democratic side Hillary Clinton wanted to increase the number of
islamic refugees from war torn countries but strengthen the gun laws.
Personal Liberties that we sacrifice are exponential attacks like these make us
scared to go to places such as the movies, sporting events , and even nightclubs. After the
string of terror attacks in our nation Domestic or Foreign we lose a lot of rights as people.
Muslims face struggles do this such as heavier screening at airports and blatant
discrimination just because of their race and culture. Those are the personal liberties
people lose and to some that is their freedom. In America Martin Luther King said don’t
judge a man by the color of their skin but judge them for the content of their character.
With the string of attacks the government and law enforcement alike what to the stop the
problem at its beginning and to them it is stopping muslims and singling out the religion
and not the radicalized ones.
The attack in orlando was horrific . It caused a lot of debates about gun control
and caused a lot of discrimination with people of different religion or beliefs. One
spiritual group has been singled out due to a group of radicalized ones. The way I look at
3. it is that we do not judge every baptist in the United States by the actions of the Westboro
Baptist Church so why do we judge the whole muslim religion by a group of them that
went radical...
