2. Instead of using thought bubbles, “Before Watchmen”
uses solid boxes to put across the character’s
thoughts.
The image at the top does not have a border, and the
image fades in to the brown background making it
slowly disappear.
It also uses speech bubbles which point out of the page,
giving off the impression that the character outside
the image is speaking.
They use images to make it look like the characters
looking through an object, in this case, a telescope
and a microscope.
A final thing they do is use the thought boxes as a
consistent theme, making it seem like we are
hearing his thoughts through a journal from the
start of the page all the way to the end.

on a white background to make

The book also uses images which are very simple. They only use bold or bright colours to make
them stand out from the plain white background. This means the child will not have to work
too hard to work the image out, and is also aesthetically pleasing for the child.
6. Chosen Fairy Tale:
The Fountain Of Youth
An old couple lived in the mountains. The man cut
wood, and the woman wove, every day. One day,
the man found a spring and drank from it. He
became a young man. Delighted, he ran home. His
wife said a young man needed a young wife, so she
would go and drink, but they should not both be
away, so he should wait. He did wait, but when she
did not come back, he went after her. He found a
baby by the spring; his wife had drunk too eagerly.
Saddened, he carried her back.
