we succeed For me to better understand Erie, the company, I first
had to appreciate its namesake, Erie, the city. When
you visit this humble lake town and order a sandwich
at a local deli or buy a newspaper from the corner
store, you’ll feel a strong sense of good will and
pride of place. After H. O. and O. G. co-founded their
company, they hired from within this community.
Because they all lived and worked together, ERIE
Employees were family, friends and neighbors who
looked out for each other, who were always ready to
lend a helping hand.

people. You’ll find Steve Jobs, Oprah and
Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Jordan and
J.K. Rowling, Richard
Branson and even Beyoncé
expounding on their
secrets to success. All of
these people—athletes
and authors, singers and
software engineers, and
business leaders—have set
themselves apart. They’ve
attained true greatness in
their fields and, ultimately,
made an indelible impact on
lives across the globe.If you watch even a few of these videos,
you’ll discover a common strand. Each has a
clear vision for the future, a passion to stay
focused, and a drive to realize their dreams.
These are not easy virtues to hold. If they
were, we’d all be creating the next smart
device or performing gravity-defying layups.
It’s hard—very, very hard. And the men
and women who possess this ability to
change our world have inspired many other
dreamers. They still do.
Seven and a half years ago, when I first
walked the halls of Erie Insurance, I thought
about our company’s inspiration—Co-
Founders H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford. As
America’s industrial age flourished, they
joined other captains of industry to position
the nation as an economic leader in the
world. If they were alive today, we would be
watching their YouTube videos and following
them on Twitter.
H. O., in particular, was a
pre-social media mogul.
For decades, he shared
his prolific, passionate
and thoughtful passages
in a weekly newsletter
to Agents. The Bulletin
remains the longest-running
weekly business publication
in the nation. H.O. had
that Oprah-like ability to
envision something new
and inspire others to make it happen. His
great success story is Erie Insurance. A
company that is better and stronger than
ever even after 90 years in business. ERIE
has been a survivor and a leader throughout
a span in which other great companies have
toppled under the pressures of the rapidly
evolving marketplace.This was the extraordinary responsibility I
grasped when I became CEO. The founders’
vision was now mine to carry. How do I
follow in their footsteps? How do I help
sustain this success?
