om MacDougall, a
Grammy-winning mu-
sic supervisor for Pix-
ar, and his wife Grace
Wu, executive vice president of
casting at NBC Universal, found
their dream house in the El Medio
Bluffs in 2003.
Originally built in 1948, the
mid-century modern home has
since grown with their family,
which now includes kids Joseph
(11) and Paige (10).
“Grace and I bought the house
because we loved the mid-centu-
ry design and location. The house
also has great ocean and mountain
views, the street is quiet and we can
actually hear the crash of waves at
night (when the traffic on PCH sub-
sides),” MacDougall told the Palisa-
dian-Post.
“As our family grew we needed
more space, and we wanted all the
bedrooms on the second floor. Jo-
seph’s bedroom was originally on
the first floor and we missed him!
So we decided to remodel,” he said.
“We did keep the original footprint
of the house as we consider living
space to be both indoors and out-
doors, so maximizing the square
footage of the house was never a
consideration for us.”
The four-bedroom, five-bath,
3,559 square-foot house boasts an
open concept indoor-outdoor de-
sign with high ceilings and abundant
natural light in addition to a unique
backyard with a lap pool.
Although many homeowners
choose to overhaul the look and feel
of a home when renovating, the Mac-
Dougall/Wu family opted to incorpo-
rate the old with the new.
“With a remodel, sometimes you
inherit quirky remnants of the prior
design. We embraced those wherev-
er we could. This is best seen in the
kids’rooms as Paige has the old mas-
ter bedroom with a private nook for
her desk that used to be an old entry-
way. Joseph’s room is actually two
levels due to the fact that this is the
space where the new and old houses
join,” he elaborated.
After going through the remod-
eling process, Mac Dougall said, “I
would suggest that anyone who can
live in their house before renovating
it, should do so,” he added.

have such great weather,
having the ability to open
the sliding glass doors and
fully expose the outdoors is
great,” Tom MacDougall said.
“It also allows us to cool the
house off, as we have this free
thing called the ocean breeze
just waiting to be allowed
inside.”

Joseph andTom kneel by the fireplace.“We committed to the
modern design philosophy in the use of materials where the same
pieces can be found throughout the house. For example, the tile in
the bathrooms is also used in the pool, and the concrete flooring
goes from the kitchen and living room to the front door and down
the walkway,”Tom MacDougall said.

Joseph and Paige hang out in the living room, with the open dining room
and kitchen areas behind them.“What we like most about this space is I
can be cooking, Grace can be working on her iPad, Joseph can be doing his
homework and Paige can be reading by the fire, and we’re all in the same
space. With high ceilings and abundant natural light, it’s the perfect spot to
do most anything alone or as a family,”Tom MacDougall said.
