CapstoneProject
This is a hands-on demonstration of student abilities as a technician and understandingof the concepts and technologies studied for
the past18 months. This is where you, the student, prove what you have learned by designinga fully functioningnetwork that
includes the items listed below. The student will givea presentation on their design that should includetheir thought process on the
project, and the strength and weakness of both the network and the student’s ability. The student will complete the network on his
own with very little assistance from Instructors or other students! Once the project is complete, student will schedulewith the
instructor a time to present, this should includebusinessdress and invitationsto all NetworkingInstructors. No preconfigured or
turnkey solution accepted and any negative effects on the lab performance such as IPs handed out, etc will result in loss of points.
 BuildCAT5e cable to fitthe need,be careful toterminate properly, andbe organized
 Install/Configure CiscoRouterStudentmayonlyuse 1 WAN IP to accomplishall below
 Install/Configure CiscoSwitch
 Studentwill create 1VLAN all servers, labdesktop computerand1 Linux client willbe onone andat leastone
WindowsClientonVLAN 2(student’slaptopisoktouse for thispurpose).
 Apache WebserverrunningonCentOS7available fromoutside firewall.Basicwebpage is OK
 RDP serveravailable from outside firewall usingport33890
 Internal DNSservertobe able toaccess webpage byname fromall clients
 Both VLAN will receive clientIP’sfromone DHCPserversoVLAN 2 computerswill needtoaccessDHCPon VLAN
1-- IPscheme shouldbe determinedusing subnettingskills
 AD controllerkeepinguptime andredundancyinmind
 At least25 Users,we will randomlypickusertotest.Needthese usersdistributedbetween4departments.(RD,
Accounting,Sales,Engineering)
 Personal Drivesmappedviagrouppolicyforall users toserver, shouldonlyhave accesstotheirs
 FolderRedirection andOffline Filesimplemented
 Map a Printerforeach department andavailableforthose usersatlogon usinglogonscript
 PasswordPolicyforall users (8-characters,30 day expiration,defaultcomplexity)
 Once the studentsExchange serversare upand functioninginExchange class itshouldserve email tothe
networkusers included in project, each usershouldhave email accountanduse Outlook tosend/receive ona
windowsclient.
 Utilize WSUSserverwithWindowsUpdatesapprovedforclientsmachines.
 Use VeeamBackuptobackup yourVMs (A free editionisavailable. If usingatrial be mindful of yourtrial period.
It mustfunctionthroughcompletionof the projectforpoints)
 Create a disasterrecoveryplan.(Documentandorganize whatisneededtoensure thisnetworkwouldbe
available if facedwithadisaster.)
 Openfilershouldbe usedforaNFSsolutionforVMware andaddedto ESXi as Datastore
 Vmware vMotionconfigured usingvCenter
 PXE bootsolutionforrapiddeployment.Use FOGor WindowsDeployment Server.Sysprepimage andbe able to
demonstrate functionality.
 SQUID proxyserverformonitoringinternettraffic.Setsome rules andbe able toverifyoperation.
 SecurityAudit- Use Kali Linux toolssuchas nmap,OpenVAS,andNikto.Documentandapplyappropriate
securitymeasurestonetwork.Includebefore/afterauditreportswithdocumentationonce completedto
establishbaseline
 Thoroughnetworkdocumentation.Be able to answerquestionsduringpresentation.
 PresentationMUSTbe set byMay 2 or itwill be scheduledforyou.
This is the only grade for this class. As this is the final project, students should expect stringent grading of the above. A rubricfor
each step will be used for grading, failure to complete a step fully will results in a 0 for that entire task if completed successfully it
will be a 1.
