Title: Positron Plasma
Supervisor: Dr. Aled Isaac, Swansea University
Description: Optimisation of Swansea University’s three-stage positron accumulator. Work was
completed using electric and magnetic fields as well as the introduction of a rotating wall technique
that applied phase-shifted voltages to a segmented electrode in efforts to radially compress the
plasma.
Relevant Experience
Swansea University Swansea
Third Year Nuclear Laboratory Projects
Project Name: Lifetime of a positron in a plastic
- Sodium iodide scintillation detectors were used simultaneously with a Labview program to find
the lifetime of a positron in a plastic via two different methods, leading edge and constant
fraction triggering.
- During this project I gained valuable lab experience and improved my skills with Labview.
Project Name: High Resolution Gamma Ray Spectroscopy
- Gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to find the highest resolution settings for a semiconductor
detector made of germanium.
- For this project there were three changing variables so a lot of data was taken. This helped me
to improve my knowledge of Origin and it’s data analysis abilities.
Joseph Fourier University Grenoble, France
Summer Program 2015
Large Scale Facilities Course
- Crystallography - Crystal structure and symmetry operations within different lattice structures.
- Synchrotron and Neutrons - Learnt about the creation and application of X-rays and neutrons
and how they are used to image crystal samples. I also visited the ILL and ESRF to receive
talks on the work being completed there.
