Visual media is a communicative medium that relies
on an investigative methodology to achieve solutions
that transmit cultural information. This practice is
often pursued with a commodified end result in mind.
However, visual media is an important component
of social discourse that relies on the objective explor-
ation in order to retain an authentic voice. New parad-
igms for visual investigation that treat art and design
as scientific research should be explored.

2. Revised Thesis Statement
Art and design are powerful tools for cultural
communication. However, experiments in these
disciplines are often pursued with a commodified
end result in mind. This thesis presents the hypoth-
esis that the visual investigation inherent in art and
design methodologies bears a significant similarity
to scientific research and should be treated as such.
New paradigms that foster exploratory research in
the visual arts should be developed, allowing prac-
titioners the freedom of exploration that engenders
groundbreaking problem solving and invention.
