• Airlines have been trimming flights nationwide, and according to a recent analysis by The Wall Street
Journal, Cleveland Hopkins International (CLE) has been one of the hardest hit airports. Nationwide,
airlines flew 11,475 fewer domestic flights the third week of July this year compared with the same week
in 2011, the paper says. That’s a 7 percent reduction in the number flights.
• At CLE, the number of flights is down 45 percent since July 2011. But we’re hardly alone. Flights are
down 66 percent at Memphis International and 45 percent at Milwaukee’s Mitchell Airport. Airlines say
the reductions have come about because eight of the biggest airlines have merged into four giants. The
airline industry suffered losses of $58 billion between 2001 and 2009, leading to the wave of mergers.
