Philosophy Statement: The American situation is both a historical and spiritual oddity, when compared to
the vast experience of tyranny, oppression, and religious darkness that has been typical of most cultures
through time. An understanding of the underpinnings of American culture in the past and its various
permutations throughout our history will better enable students to understand our present, and to comment
on and critique its present needs, especially spiritual ones.
Course Objective: The students will have a clear understanding of common American experience and
thought throughout various time periods, and will be able to analyze and comment on those ideas from a
Christian perspective.
