Honorarkonsul Orlando at a glance
History:
The post of Honorkonsul der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Orlando (“Honorary
Consul of Germany in Orlando” or “HK”) was established in 2010 with the appointment of
Jefferson Brock McClane as Honorary Consul by German Federal President Horst Köhler at
a ceremony conducted by Consul General Klaus Ranner and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer in
the Rotunda of Orlando City Hall. The appointment reflected a recognition by Consul
General Klaus Ranner that a significant population of German nationals reside in the central
Florida region and that business interests and opportunities for German companies can be
fostered in the Orlando area which is a distinct economic region from Miami and Southeast
Florida. Since 2010, HK McClane has served as an extension of the office of the Consul
General in Miami, handling citizen services, fostering business ties and opportunities and
celebrating German culture in the 14-county official area of jurisdiction and occasionally
beyond.
German appointments served per year: approximately 250
Connections to community:
Government: Besides remaining in touch with the consular corps, HK McClane
maintains a close working relationship with Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, having served as Chairman of Mayor Dyer’s International
Advisory Board since prior to appointment as HK. HK McClane also maintains relations
with the Economic Development Commission and the Orlando Chamber of Commerce, both
of which have an interest in international business. HK McClane meets sporadically with
the Orlando International Airport which has proved useful for ensuring proper notice, escort
and safety of German dignitaries visiting and transiting through Orlando. One such dignitary
was former BK Schroeder. The airport marketing department apprises of activity in the
German and European space and has advised that they are in advanced discussions with

Business: The office of HK McClane receives the enthusiastic support of German
and non-German businesses throughout the HK Orlando district and points North who help
to promote German events and create goodwill for Germany within their communities.
These businesses, in diverse industries, include Audi, Siemens, First Green Bank, Full Sail
University, Global Connections Foundation, Avison Young (real estate), GAI Consultants
(urban planning and engineering), Merrill Lynch, Clifton Larson Allen (accounting) and
Akerman (law) to name just a few.
Other community connections and cultural affairs: HK McClane serves on the board
of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park which is very proud of Bach’s German heritage.
HK McClane hosts at least one event jointly with the 80-year-old organization each season.
HK McClane supports Henry Nehrling Gardens, an experimental garden and home of
German-descended Henry Nehrling who founded the ornamental horticulture industry in
Florida through his work with caladiums and other plants. The gardens are located in
Gotha, a historically German settlement on the outskirts of Orlando dating to the late 19th
Century, when Henry Hemel bought 1000s of acres to welcome Germans to join a
settlement of like-minded intellectuals. Each year, HK McClane hosts both VIP events and
a German Day street party in November at his family home which approximately 300 attend.
