SYNOPSIS OF PROGRAMMING
PHILOSOPHIES
A. Management of people. All staff members should be given ample opportunities to contribute. Staff members desire and deserve
specific goals and direction and every effort needs to be made to insure clarity, good communication, and to provide constant
feedback. One on one, face to face communication with the entire staff on a regular basis is essential.
B. Fundamentals. All great radio stations do the x’s and o’s of radio well. I have an excellent understanding of these fundamentals,
especially how they are important when it comes to Arbitron and enhancing a diary keeper’s recall. Some of these critical basics
include 40-60 station ID’s per hour, frequent time mentions, proper structuring of live breaks, etc.
C. Branding. Branding of your product is essential for success. Listeners should know what they are “buying” every time they tune in
a station. Good branding is accomplished in many ways including consistent delivery of the station calls and slogan, frequent on and
off air marketing messages explaining what one can expect when they listen, and a sustaining effort to deliver a consistent on air
product.
D. On air marketing. Consistent and frequent on air promos sustaining the image of the station and selling listener benefits help
insure a station’s success. Music image promos defining the type of music the station plays should air frequently. It’s important not
dilute your on air marketing with promoting too many things with too many messages. Pick your strengths and hammer those homes,
with no more than three different versions of the same promo or message.
E. Listener benefits. One of the best ways to keep listeners coming back or listening longer is to constantly tell them the specifics
benefits of listening to the station. This is accomplished in many ways including live jock teases, vertical and horizontal station
promos, off-air marketing, and more.
F. Airchecking. Constant and consistent feedback and direction is something every jock wants and deserves. Airchecks should be a
positive experience for the talent. Whether they are done formally on a regular basis or informally, it’s vital that a talent gets very clear
direction. It’s ideal when the talent is able to do the listening and offer up ways that they can improve, rather than the PD doing the
suggesting.
G. Music scheduling. Being consistent from music sweep to music sweep, from hour to hour, and from day to day is very important.
Listeners don’t like surprises and it’s important to provide them a product that’s reliable and consistent. More often than not, small
playlists with tight rotations is the best strategy. Familiar songs, by familiar artists (the format’s superstars) should appear consistently
and frequently in music scheduling.
H. Website. A station’s website is an excellent tool to further sustain the brand of a station. Websites should be quick loading, easy
to navigate, should be kept fresh looking, and updated on a daily basis. Good local information is essential on a station’s site. The
cross promotional opportunities from the site to on air and on air to the site should always be used. Websites are also a great tool to
further expand on and explain station promotions, etc. Every effort should be made to stream audio.
I. Promotions. Station promotions fall into three different categories: self-serving, community based, or client oriented. Balancing
these promotions on-air and not comprising the station’s image and integrity should be of constant concern.
J. Arbriton. The first thing to understand is that Arbitron is not a true reflection of actual listening. It’s a measurement of a diary
keeper’s recall of what station they think they listened to in a given period of time. Knowing how to influence this recall is essential.
Keeping the station’s name and brand top of mind through effective on and off air marketing should always be a high priority. There
should never be any question or confusion to the name or brand of a radio station. It should be understood that getting listeners to
spend more days with a station, making listening to the station habitual, is the best way to increase AQH shares. On air marketing
should include very specific reasons and benefits to why listeners should tune in tomorrow. Also, having listeners make “special
appointments” throughout the same day or the next day to listen (when they normally wouldn’t listen to the radio) is an excellent way
to increase TSL
K. PPM. Fighting for 1st base station is really, really important. When people turn on the radio, they need to start with you first. It’s
up to you not to lose them.” Interesting is that even when people do tune out, it’s not a problem – as long as they come back often
enough. A shorter Time Spent Listening may be compensated by many different tune in moments. Therefore in a PPM world it’s about
creating occasions (listener instances) to keep people coming back. This teasing can be done on-air, and off-air; through Twitter and
Facebook The three keys to programing success in a PPM environment 1. Remove Bad Content 2. Make Seamless Transitions
3. Create Listening Addiction.

36. Babyface brings sound of youth to the city!
Radio figure boosts stations’ presence in the
community
GREG FIELDS
H&R Staff Writer
DECATUR — Jamie “Babyface” Pendleton is here to make you notice him. “My
whole technique is to attack the streets,” said Pendleton, program director for Hot
105.5 in Champaign and production director for Magic 1050 in Decatur.
Pendleton, who came to the area in July, has caused major changes to the two
urban stations. He has changed the station’s logos, gone to a more live format,
added radio personalities Lady LaVeck and White Boy, put signage on company
vehicles, created community calendars, brought the popular syndicated hip-hop
Baka Boyz show to the Friday night rotation and increased both stations’
visibility. He is on the air from 2 to 7 p.m. weekdays on 105.5.
For a recent concert in Champaign by rapper Nelly, Pendleton even brought the
station closer to its listeners, broadcasting live in front of Assembly Hall, counting
down until the concert. The station also hosted an afterparty at the Canopy Club.
His goal is to increase the stations’ presence in the community.
“We’re hip-hop and R&B,” Pendleton said. “Our core artists are Anthony
Hamilton, 50 Cent, The Game, Alicia Keys. We’re more of a mixture of BET and
MTV. Our concentration is the younger audience, the 12to 24-year-olds.”
Pendleton was a program director for Clear Channel in Midland/
Odessa, Texas, before coming to Central Illinois. He has been the program
director for Hot 105.5 since July and took over production director duties for
Magic 1050 in January.

Pendleton has a long history with music and radio. He was born in Gary, Ind.,
according to his Web site at www.djbabyface.com. He moved to Houston in
1987, where he worked at several urban radio stations. He was a DJ on the club
circuit before landing a job at the hip-hop station Club Party 104.9. His success
there led to his program director/music director post at 96.1 in Midland/
Odessa.
Joel Fletcher, general manager and vice president of NextMedia Group, heard
about Pendleton through a corporate program director and called him on a
Saturday morning. He ended up talking to him for 45 minutes before hiring him.
“First and foremost, he has passion. And he absolutely knows the format inside
and out,” Fletcher said. “The other thing is I was really impressed with his
commitment to serving the community. He cleaned (105.5) up. It sounds like a
big-time station.”
Pendleton’s expertise is imaging, promos, commercial production and community
involvement. As a former club DJ and current radio personality, he also knows a
lot about mixing, hot artists and the flow of a radio show.
The numbers support Pendleton’s actions. Most of his DJs are No. 1 in the
Arbitron ratings when it comes to his target audience of 12to 24-year-olds,
Pendleton said. His stations are No. 3 and No. 6 in the Decatur and Champaign
markets overall respectively, which are better showings than previous years,
Pendleton said.

All of his radio personalities — Lady LaVeck, D-Nic, White Boy, even himself —
are No. 1 in the teen brackets. Arbitron measures which radio stations are ranked
in their market by tracking who listens to what and when they listen. They also
track the age groups of listeners.
Pendleton admits his stations have work to do with older listeners, where their
numbers aren’t nearly as encouraging. Pendleton goals are bigger than numbers,
though.
“I want to bring people together and break any divides, whether it’s racial or
whatever,” Pendleton said.
