Countries across the world will be commemorating the centenary of the end of the First
World War in November 2018. More importantly, remembering and honouring the gallant
lives of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the sovereignty of their Nations.
Here in Kenya we will be remembering, not only the International forces who took part in
the East African Campaign but also the African soldiers, porters and bearers who never

After invading British East Africa on the 15 August 1914, German Schutztruppe troops
from German East Africa occupied an area from the border town of Taveta to the Tsavo
West National Park in Taita Taveta County, for 18 months before the combined Allied
force of British, South African, Indian and the Kings African Rifles with thousands of
Kenyan porters drove the Schutztruppe back into Tanzania. The Germans took the Allied
th
forces through Eastern Africa to Zambia, where on 25 November 1918, fourteen days
after the armistice was signed in Europe, Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck finally laid
down his armsendinganincredibleguerrillacampaign.
