1. READING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
.” Reading literacy is now very critical to our students not only in English
subject but also in all areas of the curriculum. With this concern, the San Rafael
National High School has adopted the RA.C Program ( Reading Across Curriculum
wherein the enrichment activities under the D.E.A.R ( Drop Everything and Read )
program of the English Department activity is heightened within and across the
subject areas with collaborative effort, time and resources of the subject teachers . The
implementation is observed in celebration of the National Reading Month for school
year 2012-2013. According to the No Child Left Behind Act, as described in the
(Learning Point Associates, 2005) “adolescent literacy, or the reading and writing
skills of middle and high school students, is critical to student success in all areas of
the curriculum.” A significant study has indicated that 68% of grade 12 students read
below the proficient level. Indeed, the “ No Child Left Behind” is calling for—
demanding educational innovations and reforms.
From November 21 to 27, the school will conduct the RAC activity
.There are five (5) enrichment readings prepared by the subject departments .These
short readings will be used with 15 minute reading session in very class as soon as the
ring of the bell is sounded as hint that reading time is setting in. The subject teacher
who is holding his/her particular learning episode in his/her subject will now drop
everything and read with her/his students . Figuring things out on the content will be
processed in a light and cool mode of classroom interactions. Reading comprehension
is a prime concern of every teacher to achieve reading literacy.
With this innovation where reading approach is in multi-disciplinary
mode, students will not only be able to gain better understanding and appreciation of
content based material, but this will also be improving students’ overall reading
skills.
