A Surreal
Presentation
Ensuring Perfection
e cannot deny the fact that our precious human world is full of complexities, confusion, and
Wchaos. Even the thought of leading ourselves through a chaotic situation is formidable.
Imagine, we are around one thousand people in a hospital and it had a wild fire. Our most
common reaction will be heading to the safest place we know and save our asses. Hospital authorities will
guide you through this mishap but how? Explaining every shit caution verbally to everyone is quite a task,
and understanding and acting on instructions ideally in that anarchy is certainly possible on paper, but very
difficult to accomplish, isn’t it?
To avoid such adversities and slipups, we plan, strategize and execute. Although constructing picture-
perfect strategies on paper is commendable but expecting everyone to act precisely by providing them a
single paper is comical. For the reason, a bunch of people cannot virtualize the scenario by the same way.
If it is about ensuring the perfection in execution then a complete understanding of situation is
prerequisite. Then let’s talk about how we can ensure that… I guess by narrowing the possibilities of
human error like imagining the scenario in the same way we can ate that rock. But how is it possible,
right? Meet simulation. Putting into the typical words the simulation is an imitation of the operation of a
real-world process or system.
The surreal technologies like virtual modeling and simulation are gaining popularity amongst the business
world for their revolutionary approach towards ideation and its visual capabilities. Creating a virtual
imagery these technologies explain the concept with more precision and intelligibility. Simulation can be
used to show the eventual real effects of alternative conditions and courses of action. The technology has
changed perspectives of presentation. The act of simulating something first requires that a model be
developed; this model represents the key characteristics, behaviors and functions of the selected physical
or abstract system or process. The model represents the system itself, whereas the simulation represents
the operation of the system over time.
Simulation is used in many contexts, such as simulation of technology for performance optimization,
safety engineering, testing, training, education, and video games. Additionally, computer experiments
are used to study simulation models. Simulation is also used with scientific modeling of natural
systems or human systems to gain insight into their functioning, as in economics. Numerous sectors
are exploring the seamless possibilities of the simulation. However, the enormously advanced
industries like healthcare, education, automobile, development and training are witnessing the
incalculable benefits of simulation in particular.
With a vision to voyage into the amazing world of simulation Insights Success brings a distinctive

Founded in 2007 at San Mateo, CA, Heartwood’s
virtual interactive simulations and guides help
operations, maintenance, and field service teams
perform complex procedures faster, safer and with less
errors. Its visual, 3D interactive and portable applications
allow them to practice procedures on equipment virtually
via web, PC, mobile, AR and VR platforms.
Heartwood’s customers reduce workforce training time
by up to 60% and see an ROI of up to 7x.
As a market leader, Heartwood supports a strong base of
customers and partners including, Apple, Reynolds,
Pacific Gas & Electric, Norfolk Southern, Tetra Pak,
Komatsu, Audi, Sikorsky, Oshkosh and Raytheon.
Leading brands in Manufacturing, Utilities, Energy,
Railroad, Heavy Equipment, Automotive, Aerospace and
Defense leverage its virtual interactive simulations and
guides every day. It is recognized as one of Inc.
Magazine’s 500|5000 Fastest Growing Companies, and a
“Top Simulation and Training” company.
Virtual Interactive Experience
Heartwood Inc. offers Virtual Interactive Training
(Simulations & Guides) that allows workforce to train
anytime, anywhere, on any platform. Instructional
information is displayed as 3D interactive content that
mirrors the real world in both ‘form’ and
‘function’. Simply put, this means it looks
like the real thing, and acts like it. The 3D
Interactive applications developed by the
company are specifically tailored for
Operations, Maintenance (O&M) & Safety.
A Tech Enthusiast
Raj Raheja is the CEO of Heartwood Inc.
He provides a leading voice for the future
of 3D Interactivity and Virtual Training
technologies. He believes in meshing great
technologies together and is passionate
when Visual and Interactive technologies
are at play. Raj co-founded Heartwood with
Neil Wadhawan, and focuses on company
vision, culture and new technology
development.
“I believe in using technology to make jobs
easier, faster and safer. And I also believe
that we should do it responsibly, not just
because it can be implemented. For
example, tacking on a VR headset onto an
employee with no other training access
point and roadmap thought, would just be a science
project”, states Raj.
He believes, “Our company, based in Silicon Valley – a
region committed to innovation – has developed a way to
help technical workforce learn complex tasks with 3d
interactive technology that is as simple as using any
other app – on their tablet, PC, web browser, and yes,
AR and VR as well. Training happens in a classroom, on
a plant floor, in between job sites and 2 minutes before
the task sometimes. We need to be there for the worker
all the way.”
Raj has been awarded ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ and
featured in – Inc. & Entrepreneur magazines, San
Francisco Business Times, Silicon Valley Business
Journal and more. He has been an invited speaker at
Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, Autodesk, Unity and more.
He intensely writes about his vision for the industry, the
company, his team and founding principles on
Heartwood’s well-read blog.
Personalized Training Approach
Raj has mentioned a study published by Deloitte In
2015, which states that around two million
manufacturing jobs would go unfilled between 2018 and
2028, with a potential economic impact of 2.5 trillion.
Skilled technical trade positions will go empty because
companies will not find trained workers to fill them.
However, he believes that at the same time, there is an
emerging trend in learning that could be a silver bullet –
the shift from Instructor-led training to Student-centered
learning. The one-size fits all approach to training may
no longer be sufficient. Many companies are moving
from “chalk and talk” style delivery to more efficient and
effective hybrid learning programs. Unfortunately,
sometimes that still results in “Death by PowerPoint”,
just that it happens online. There is a lot of reading and
seeing, but not much doing.
This is where Heartwood steps in. Its 3D Interactive
Virtual Training apps allow workforce to practice
procedures anywhere, anytime - before they arrive on
their shift. This gets them into peak production mode
faster and decreases costly ramp-up training. Now
workers can learn to operate and maintain equipment
using engaging visual apps. There is less need to fly new
hires in for training. There’s consistency worldwide. And
it’s all done in less time and at scale — so employees are
in the field or on the floor working smarter, sooner.
Training on Field
The initial focus of Heartwood was to fill the gap
between costly live training and ineffective passive
eLearning. At the core, it existed as a Training &
Simulation company. After a decade of Enterprise
training deployments in Fortune 1000 companies, the
company learned that there is a ton of untapped ROI
beyond the classroom or training environment – it’s in
the field.
It was reducing learning times and travel costs for
training sessions, making the investment into its
technology certainly worthy, but the real impact was
when Heartwood made small gains over high volume.
Simply put, reducing training costs was great, but
reducing operational costs in the field was the bigger
deal. Now its solution is designed to span the lifespan of
the worker from Training-to-Field-to-Refresher learning
as one cohesive value extended loop.
Adversities in Technology
According to Heartwood, its biggest challenge by far and
also the toughest competition is fighting status quo.
Anytime new technology is introduced, especially in the
enterprise, there is cautious optimism and a hesitation to
Train Faster, Smarter
with our
‘Learn-by-doing’ Apps.
act. Thankfully that is changing at an unprecedented
pace. It is tough to go even a week without hearing some
Fortune 1000 company adopting interactive or
immersive technologies for training and field service.
The company takes the business case approach with its
customers, insisting on a minimum of 3 KPI’s (key
performance indicators) on the first pilot initiative. That
way success, either in cost avoidance or otherwise, can
be measured and lays the path for companywide
implementation. When the team can’t clearly define that
going in, it has even asked the customer to halt and re-
think their starting point.
Future Aspirations
According to Heartwood, Anyone who has a job needs
training, and always will. How they will train though –
that will change with every technology paradigm shift.
The tough part is to first predict where the opportunity is
going to be, and second, how dynamic it is.
It is undeniable that the worker of tomorrow will be
more decentralized, more mobile, and needing
information ‘just-in-time’ at the point of use. From a
platform perspective, Heartwood is predicting some
combination of Tablet+Phone+Wearable and a seamless
switch between them. They would all have a similar
experience of absorbing content, just different degrees of
immersion and end-use. The company is betting on that
vision and is planning its solution roadmap accordingly.
Cliental Assessments
“The owner’s manual is so confusing. It’s almost
impossible to mess up when we use your apps. They are
something that can be utilized by apprentices and
journeymen for years to refresh their skills.” – Pacific
Gas & Electric
“Confidence & mastery has noticeably improved! Where
students seemed uncertain before, you can now see that
the person knows what they’re doing.” – Norfolk
Southern Railway
“The Audi TT simulation is one of the best received WBT
modules that we have ever done! Over 15000 dealer
folks benefited from the training- and it was a
tremendous help in introducing the new Virtual Cockpit
Audi technology to our dealer body. I just want to say
that you guys have done a great job on the two Audi
Virtual Cockpit Simulations. Everyone was very
impressed by it. It is featured on the Audi German
training website and is available worldwide.” –

About the Author
From Artificial
To Authentic
AI:
ith so much attention focused on Artificial
WIntelligence (AI), it’s worth remembering that
one size does not fit all. There are specific
business-related pain points in mind when a company
decides to deploy AI technology, so making the right
choices can be a tricky task.
For example, several months ago, an AI related
breakthrough was announced – a robot learned and
demonstrated the ability to perform a perfect backflip.
While it is well acknowledged that the invested research
and development for this mission was huge and the
commercial potential for some applications is enormous, it
is somewhat unclear how this specific innovation or the
core models and algorithms of it, can serve other industries
and verticals. Herein lies the problem.
|December 2018|16
Gauging AI success in one field in many cases can be
meaningless for another. To make things worse, even when
trying to go deeper into the technology and attempting to
evaluate, for example, which Machine Learning algorithms
are utilized by the product, or what are the number of layers
in the Deep Neural Network models mentioned by specific
vendors, in the end it will be possibly pointless as it does
not directly reflect the solution deployment ‘success’
implications.
Nevertheless, it seems that the market ignores this reality
and continues to evaluate AI-based products by buzzword
checklists using familiar and related AI terminology (e.g.,
Supervised, Unsupervised, Deep Learning etc.). While
checklists are an effective tool for comparative analysis it
still requires the ‘right’ items to be included. Unfortunately,
what typically is absent are the items which are important to
the customer, from a problem-solution perspective.
Introducing Authentic AI
Given all of this, there is a need to change the narrative
around AI technology and solutions to something
meaningful and authentic that reflects the real-life
challenges and opportunities that businesses are facing.
This is the time to introduce Authentic AI.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘Authentic’ as
both ‘worthy of acceptance or belief as conforming to or
based on fact’and ‘conforming to an original so as to
reproduce essential features’. This is not about ‘Fake’ to be
contrasted with ‘Real’. It’s about the essential features of AI
which need to be acknowledged, and hence, redefine the
‘checklist’. Often, these essential ‘authentic’ features are
hidden and only surface when a CIO/CDO is faced with a
new problem to be solved. This is seen especially when the
AI aspects of a proposed product or solution are fully
explored by asking questions such as:
- Is the AI technology utilized by the product aimed
specifically for my problem, optimally (e.g.,
performance, cost, etc.)?
- Is it capable of addressing the complete problem or
only a part of it?
- Can it be assimilated into the existing ecosystem
without imposing new demands?
- Can it address the compelling environmental
conditions of the problem space?
These issues can be grouped into three different ‘classes’ -
‘Original’, ‘Holistic’ and ‘Pragmatic’:
Original – How innovative is the solution? This can be
quantified by assessing the following:
- the invention of new algorithms or even new models
and
- the use of complex orchestration techniques or
- through the capability to handle complex data formats
and structures.
While there is no need to re-invent the wheel repetitively
for any problem, there are distinctive characteristics which
require optimizing.
Holistic – How complete is the proposed AI technology? It
takes into account the capability of handling the end-to-end
aspects of the solution, the competence of harmonizing the
operation of the various AI components of the solution and
the ability to adapt to ever changing conditions of the AI
application.
Pragmatic – Can the technology solve real world problems
in their actual and natural space in a commercially viable
way? This means that for example the data sources can be
processed in their most native format (both unstructured or
structured) as well as provide insights or results matching
the pragmatic needs of the specific market expectations. In
addition, the ability to be quickly deployed and rapid to act
are assessed.
All of these elements should be used to systematically
assess and evaluate AI-based products and solutions to
assess their authenticity and therefore effectiveness in
specific use cases.
For example, many home-loan mortgage evaluation and
recommendation systems utilize a somewhat isolated
machine learning based applicant classification method, one
of many other processes included within the solution. The
AI in this solution cannot be considered Authentic AI to a
high degree as it ‘scores’ low on the ‘Original’ and
‘Holistic’ classes as it isn’t innovative ‘enough’ (from an AI
sense). In addition, the AI component itself does not cover
on its own the end-to-end aspects of the solution (hence
affecting the overall performance and precision). It could be
considered to be ‘Pragmatic’ to some level if it can handle
the required data sources of financial institutions or the
customer applications natively, and if the solution ‘output’
are the explicit results required as a specific
recommendation (e.g., loan conditions). However, the
deployment timeline (time-to-market) and commercial
aspects need to be evaluated as well. This is just one
example of many others, covering all kinds of variations.
Perfect backflips may grant you a gold medal if you are a
gymnast but if you are a master chess player don’t expect a
winning move.

creativity, which do and will favor the
human species for future. As robotics
is vibrantly globalized, soon it will be
mainstreamed in various fields and
sectors. Currently, there are numerous
enterprises worldwide which are
implementing robotics into industrial,
healthcare and commercial use.
Whereas, robotics have experienced a
lot of up’s and down’s during this
tenure, but with the time, it held a
stronghold in the digital world.
Whenever the discussion arises about
the applications of robotics, the
industrial sector has bespoken
benefits’. Robots have become more
affordable, smart and productive over
the years. The sectors like agriculture,
construction, warehousing and
logistics, and customer services. By
investing more in robots, an enterprise

will be solving certain problems more
accurately and efficiently. Meanwhile,
utilizing robots will help enterprises to
push their limits in order to fill up the
productivity voids.
With each slippage of time, the
technology is upgrading so does the
robotics. The advancements in robotics
field will be a boon to the enterprises in
order to increase growth and
productivity rate. There are certain
parameters that should be considered
while implementing robotics in the
enterprise, such as

Modifying; as per the user’s need
Generally, robots used to require
advanced training in order to operate
comfortably. It’s not an issue for the
big enterprises as they acquire the
skilled people to deal with, where the
small enterprises are not so gifted with
loads of assets initially. But, with the
new advances in robotics technologies,
it has become easier for small ventures
to invest in robots for increasing the
productivity generating more revenue.
Just by giving wireless commands
from an IOT, demonstrating tasks to
the robots gets easier. Nowadays, there
are numerous varieties of robots to
carry out multitasks, thus as per the
user’s need, one can invest in robots
for the industrial purpose.
Easily Compatible
Unlike the big manufacturing robots in
huge industries, there are various
collaborative robots which are
specially designed to work alongside
and to assist human workers in a
variety of tasks. Earlier it was sort of
stressful for an enterprise to allot
specific man-power for certain task,
but by implementing co-bots such
issues are resolved. As the size and
shape of co-bots are getting more
compact, it may benefit the enterprises
in various terms.
Easy to Develop
Earlier robots were not able to program
easily due to the incompatibility
between the user interface and
hardware. But, now Robotic Operating
System (ROS) is dominating the
industry by providing solutions for
varied robots in order to perform the
task without lagging. It’s an open-
source framework which helps
developers to redirect the programming
in different ways. This open-source
framework is dominating the growth
towards the constructive direction.

sector, robotics is still unaffected. From past few years, the
technology, as well as its implementation, has increased
substantially. Have a look on such few areas for possible
applications.
Obliging Enterprises through Robotics
Cobot’s: Assisting Humans
Unlike big manufacturing robots, collaborative robots are
designed to work with employees in enterprises and
corporates. The design is smart enough to assist humans
and also, compact enough to handle. Generally, the small
and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are slightly boon by
implementing co-bots in day to day life, as they are easily
adaptable, easy to process and most importantly it’s
affordable. According to some experts, there’s a possibility
of enormous growth in the business, if Co-bots are
implemented widely. The main motive of industrial robots
is to the prioritized safety of employees and workers, yet
the chances of accidents are always at high risk. Whereas,
co-bots works as a service robot; they come in various
shape and sizes easing the workability and reducing the
liability of employees. In order to get sanctioned as service
robots, any co-bot has to pass certain testing parameters by
robot manufacturing companies, factors such as easily
compatible with other devices and programs, safe in
use, easy to command, and processing at a faster
rate. Currently, co-bots are used for processes
like machine tending, packaging, and material
handling. In spite of industries, co-bots are
used in various sectors such as in farming,
hospitals, healthcare and facilities, and
labs. It does come under robot-as-a-
service format.
Cloud Robotics
Imagine an enterprise with
robots that are totally independent
to the user commands, in other
words, no external programming
may require in order to process robots
for the various tasks. In accordance to
that, a User Interface to be exact might not
be needed in the future, as machine learning is
already on its verge to get explored. Currently, in
order to carry out certain tasks robots are been told to
what to do using the interface whereas, cloud robotics
directly twitch compatible code from the clouds which
are required for the tasks. To work alongside with
humans, robots must be deep learning the subjects
simultaneously able to point out problems and provide
solutions right away. Meanwhile, it will be a boon for the
enterprises if the employees will get to interact with robots
as a personified object rather than a machine. Soon, there
with personal robotics cloud which will help robots to take
and give information directly. Depending on the robot, it
can process various functions such as lifting, leveraging,
handle vision, object recognition and other, thus certain
robots acquire such skills and will provide information to
the cloud. Then, this information helps other robots to get
enlightened. In simple words to say, robots will teach other
robots for the better good of the enterprises. On the other
hand, as robots are getting more and more evolved, filtering
of essential information from rest will get much easier. This
will comfort both big and small enterprises to manage big
data more precisely.
With the emergence of advancement in robotics, they are on
the verge to touch skies already. If considering the above
possible factors, this evergreen era of robotics is less likely
to get saturated due to technological disruption. As the
technologies are growing faster, the enterprises must to
catch-up with them accordingly. It’s high time to implement
new technologies especially of the robotics as its utilization
is not only subjected to warehouses but also, towards the in-
house enterprise work. Hopefully, there’s a possibility of
robot-oriented industries in the future.

Crossing the Chasm
Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) has been used for
more than 50 years to accelerate the development and time
to market of high quality products in virtually all industries.
The ability of using the full potential of CAE to help
engineering complex, innovative and high performance
products depends on its fidelity, efficiency and accessibility.
Today a lot of the innovation and performance are driven by
advanced materials such as composites. The ability to
engineer such materials and to use their full potential in
complex system is thus a key for an effective & efficient use
of CAE to drive innovative product design!
Since 2003, e-Xstream has been developing Digimat
(Digital Material) from one academic software module to
become the leading platform for material and structural
engineering of multi-phase materials like composites.
Digimat has been designed to offer a holistic solution for a
large variety of composite materials and to bridge the gap
between process simulation & structural engineering. With
Digimat, e-Xtream created a new innovative product and
also a completely new market where the organization has
been growing at the high double-digit rate for the last 13
years.
In 2012, e-Xstream “Crossed the Chasm” from the early
adopter to the early majority, it joined MSC Software
Company (a winner of R&D100 2015 with Apex) where the
organization established material modeling as one of the
three strategic pillars of the company.
In 2013, the organization transformed Digimat to host its
expert tools and the company introduced vertical solutions
and expert knowledge in the software platform. The first
vertical solution that e-Xtream released, Digimat-RP
(“Reinforced Plastics), is now the industry standard for
modeling reinforced plastics. In 2015, Digimat-VA was
introduced, which eventually created a lot of excitement in
the target industries and have already won two innovation
awards in the composite industry: JEC Innovation Award by
JEC Group & ACE Awards for Composite Excellence by
ACAM&SAMPE. Success is also achieved through a
process of continuous innovation, which has earned the
company multiple awards in international competitions,
including the JEC Innovation Award, ACE Composite
Excellence and R&D100, considered the “Oscar of the Year
for innovation”.
As recent developments, e-Xstream has launched Digimat
Additive Manufacturing solution based on 15 years of
experience and know-how in material modeling - to support
the fast transition from rapid prototyping into industrial

Gary Cardenas
President
TOC Logistics
|December 2018|36
The logistics and supply chain management industry
is one that is constantly evolving and optimizing,
and because of the competitive nature of the
industry, innovation is key for success. Modern
technologies have not only aided in the streamlining of
supply chains and company processes, but have also set the
industry on a technologically advanced path that many
could not have even imagined fifteen or twenty years ago.
From robotics in warehouses and autonomous ships and
trucks, to computerized shipping and tracking, technology
has changed the industry for the better and has provided
new levels of visibility.
With the aid of technology, supply chains of the future may
be a bit more complex, but will certainly be more efficient
and less expensive. A few of the technological
advancements that have changed the game for the logistics
and supply chain management industry are:
Computerized Shipping and Tracking
Modern technology has drastically impacted the shipping
industry and has made for more efficient and accurate
tracking. With a wide array of different supply chain
management software programs on the market, logistics and
supply chain professionals and their clients are able to keep
an eye on their shipments during every step of the supply
chain journey. With every second being crucial in the world
of supply chain management, the ability to provide
complete transparency to clients in terms of where their
packages are and when they will arrive is something that is
extremely valuable.
Computerized shipping and tracking has also largely
reduced the amount of time spent shipping, receiving,
tracking packages and compiling shipment data, as all
necessary data can be stored in one easy-to-access place.
And in this case, saving time means saving money. Being
able to digitally organize data and monitor shipping and
tracking information also reduces the opportunities for
human error. With digital records there is no longer a worry
that sloppy handwriting or a misplaced piece of paper will
throw a wrench in a shipment being delivered on time, or to
the right place.
“Futuristic” Autonomous Vehicles
A big technological push in the industry right now is the
advancement of autonomous vehicles, electrification, use of
solar power, and energy storage, all of which will be used
across the board to both reduce cost and increase efficiency.
Right now, energy and transportation make up more than
half of total supply chain costs and labor accounts for a
little less than a third of costs. With further technological
advancements, the transportation and labor aspects of
supply chains will eventually cost very, very little compared
to what they do today.
The eventual implementation of autonomous electric
vehicles, which can be programmed to use the most efficient
routes and run throughout the night without a driver, will
drive down the cost of labor and increase capacity on the
roads. Autonomous vehicles will also address the growing
concern of truck driver shortages throughout the industry.
Also on the very near horizon is the use of autonomous
ships. Autonomous ships would address the issues of piracy,
talent shortage in the ocean shipping industry and accidents
caused by human error.
Big Data
Logistics and supply chain management professionals live
and die by data. A recent study by the Council of Supply
Chain Management Professionals shows that 98 percent of
third-party logistics firms and 93 percent of shippers feel
that data-driven decision making is key to supply chain
activities. Technological advancements have made it
extremely easy to gather and analyze key pieces of data.
Data surrounding shipping times, cargo weight, weather
patterns, traffic routes, and more can lead to greater
transparency, optimized routes, greater reliability and
automated supply chains. Having a team that is able to
accurately interpret big data is key to success, and will
likely save a company both time and money. There is a
reason UPS drivers don’t make left turns. Someone on the
UPS team analyzed large amounts of data, which is now
available thanks to technology, and determined that
eliminating the majority of left turns would use 10 million
less gallons of fuel, emit 20,000 tonnes less carbon dioxide
into the air and help deliver 350,000 more packages every
year.
Technology is something that is hard to predict and often
difficult to wrap your head around, but the logistics and
supply chain industry is benefiting from every new
technological advancement in our field. The supply chains
that we are working with today will be drastically different
in five or ten years’ time, and almost unrecognizable in
twenty or thirty years. Technology has made supply chain
management more efficient, transparent and cost-effective. It
is important to have members of your team that are willing
to embrace new ways of doing things and that are able to
stay up-to-date on new forms of technology. This industry is
constantly changing, and in order to be successful you need
to be willing to change along with it.

Thriving in a Conservative Ecosystem
Simlat started its journey as a startup in the aerospace industry
segment mainly dominated by military customers of a highly
conservative eco system. It took a while until Simlat’s innovation,
quality, and cost-effectiveness were adopted by this market.
Initial sales were hard, but once key international customers adopted
Simlat technologies and were extremely satisfied by the technology
and support, Simlat’s reputation and market share grew constantly in
its niche markets.
Moreover, along with the shifting of the UAS industry towards civil
and commercial applications, Simlat’s advantages became even
more apparent leading to a leap in demand and installations. By
2013 Simlat sold products in 25 different countries. Later in 2016,
Simlat was recognized by Frost & Sullivan as a leading provider of
UAS training and simulation platforms as well as the most advanced
UAS training solutions.
These days, Simlat’s products are being used around the world in
diverse programs and provide a balanced and optimal solution for
UAS operation training needs. Currently, the organization’s
customer base is continuously growing with more UAS OEM
choosing Simlat simulation as an integral part of their solution as
well as prominent training centers selecting Simlat comprehensive
line of products.
Simlat believes that in order to operate a UAS correctly, safely and
effectively, a UAS operator should receive excellent training.
However, when people hear the word “simulation” they become
skeptic regarding the effectiveness of simulated training. During its
initial period, Simlat had to prove why its systems were worthy and
effective for the training of UAS operators especially since some of
the benefits of simulation are not always so straightforward. With a
vision to overcome this challenge, Simlat referred potential
customers to existing ones from various backgrounds to showcase
the value of its systems.
Making Simulation Much More Accessible
Simlat invests heavily in Research and Development and constantly
improves its products and technology. It has continued to grow and
develop its content packages and simulation capabilities to various
fields of UAS use in order to continue leading the world of UAS
simulation.
Simlat is always in touch with its customers and people in the
ecosystem which helps the organization to set its goals for the future.
It continuously pushes the boundaries as far as realism is concerned.
The organization also believes simulation shall become more
accessible in terms of connectivity and IT platforms, and is working
around the clock in order to facilitate that trend.

PRODUCT LIFE
CYCLE MANAGEMENT
Technology Transforming the
Construction World
|December 2018|40
In the modern global economy, the construction enterprises have to face several challenges to streamline processes;
increase revenues and cut cost whilst at the same time meet regulatory demands. The Product Life Cycle Management
technology (PLM) is aiding these enterprises with innovative Product Data Management (PDM) solutions. Currently,
PLM is playing a vital role in providing the companies with keys to optimize their businesses. It is also playing a significant
role in the designing, developing, and managing the construction machinery and products so that the enterprises can attain a
greater profitability and stability.
Boosting the Mobility
In the fast stirring construction world, technology is becoming explicit in making the process faster and more efficient. PLM
enables enterprises with improved communication and responsiveness. Efficient communication and information-sharing
can foster the setting of a construction company and enforce smooth on-site and
off-site operations. As such, PLM provides more flexibility to the work
leading to frequent collaboration, cut costs and escalate business
outcomes. It is integrating applications that help the companies to
innovate their products regarding the development and the
engineering performance. Also, consistency of working methods
and more efficient data management leads to mobility in the
workplace and provides prominent decision-making process
assistance.
Catching the Wave of Business Analytics
Data is of great use for any construction
enterprise. This data need not be
disputed. PLM technology is the key
to monitor the engineering data
and process information in a

significant manner. It provides selective access to the data and mechanism related to the control of the data leading
to end-to-end construction processes. This helps in carving-out better construction solutions. PLM is making
significant efforts needed to bring right data in the right form and delivers functions that allow the information to be
under control. It precisely supports the construction processes with the suitable risk & compliance as well as the
service management. PML is surely assisting the business analytics with its applications, delivering strategical and
tactical business values.
The integration of PLM with analytics will help the construction companies in capturing and analyzing any sort of
content, allowing transparent delivery of only the important data into the 3D-experience platform. This facilitates
the elimination of legacy tools and systems in a controlled and low-risk manner.
Connecting Every Dot of the Market— Construction Lifecycle Management
Construction Lifecycle Management (CLM) is simply PLM for Construction and Engineering. It promotes
innovative ways of thinking and doing business by delivering cutting-edge Construction Process Integration
framework. This helps the organizations to withstand the market complexities and manage all the phases of the
Lifecycle of a Capital Asset holistically: design, build, operate and retirement. In the construction market,
Production and Manufacturing are unique fields on their own but share a great deal of things together. Individually
these fields are concerned with creation. Broadly, manufacturing is concerned with creation of products and
production is concerned with capital assets. CLM helps organizations to clearly build a symbiotic relationship
between the two. It has helped connecting every dot of the construction industry and is profoundly transforming the
construction-tech processes.
CLM provides a complete strategic business approach for the companies by which they can implement a consistent
set of business solutions— integrating people, processes, and information. It highlights these solutions in support of
the collaborative creation, management, dissemination, and use of construction definition information. It is a
comprehensive business approach that conduits the opening between design, engineering, construction and profit-
margin for the business enterprises.
CLM covers missing support regions and overcomes the lack of integration and collaboration between different
business operations taking place in the industry. It facilitates the involvement of construction information across all
enterprise functions, customers, and suppliers.
CLM is taking the construction market to the next level by underpinning both lean practices and standardized
modules. It gives a solid foundation to an organization. It is nothing more than a PLM for construction practices
which is improving how information is organized and how changes are managed. It can prevent inhibiting the re-
introduction of waste into operations once it has eliminated and generated profitable business outcomes. It helps in
managing how the products and their designs are standardized, organized into configurable modules, and efficiently
manufactured based upon the data.
A Tech-Enabled Future
There will be an exciting future for the construction industry with the rapid development in the PLM industry. It will
empower the next wave of business productivity. Integration of PLM in the cloud, mobile, and the IoT will lead to
rewarding opportunities with extraordinary contributions to the construction world. PLM will provide the
construction enterprises with a seamless data integration layer to access the core database information in a simple
and efficient manner. These curated moves would create a successful platform for an organization to set its pillars
right into the market. Furthermore, systems decomposition and process re-engineering would become paramount to
the IT skill inventory. This would be due to the business operations and master data hitches decomposed in unison
and enabled by the PLM technology platforms of the future.

based in Munich and Boston and currently employs more
than 60 team members.
What are the cutting-edge products/solutions offered by
SimScale?
SimScale offers state-of-the-art FEA and CFD capabilities
for structural, thermal and flow simulations via a standard
web browser. As the platform is completely cloud-based,
our customers benefit from seamless collaboration
capabilities and practically unlimited computing power,
supporting the most sophisticated simulation projects. Our
customers have used SimScale to design complex products
ranging from small electronic components, to race cars,
ships and high-rise buildings.
Describe the experiences, achievements or lessons learnt
that have shaped the journey of the company.
From the very beginning, SimScale’s mantra has been that
the success of our customers is our success. Only if our
customers gain a positive ROI on their investment in
simulation, will we be successful. Because of this, the
driving force behind how we build our product, how we
organize support and what we do on a daily basis has
always been our customers and the engineering challenges
they face.
What are the challenges faced in providing simulation
solutions and how is SimScale serving to tackle them?
For businesses interested in using engineering simulation as
a product development tool, integrating it into their
workflow traditionally meant overcoming several barriers:
the cost, maintenance and rollout of high-performance
computing hardware, procurement of simulation software
often for more than $50,000 per seat, and hiring or training
specialized personnel capable of using it. SimScale removes
these barriers by providing an end-to-end simulation
workflow completely in the cloud with a pay-as-you-go
pricing model. Thanks to the seamless collaboration with
our specialized support staff as well as a large community
of engineering professionals, onboarding and hence time to
effective use is cut to a fraction of the time required with
traditional CAE software.
What according to you could be the potential future of
simulation solutions and how does SimScale envision its
role in it?
We believe that engineering simulation has a bright future.
Until now, simulation has primarily been used as a design
validation tool in the late phases of the product
development process. In the future, simulation will play an
important role across the entire product life cycle. This
process is already beginning, as increased accessibility is
seeing a wider range of industries use simulation earlier in
the development cycle — this is what SimScale focuses on
today. Beyond that, we’ll see simulation being used to train
hardware as well as during operation to monitor
performance. IoT and Digital Twins are concepts that will
lead to not just simulating a design before manufacturing
but actually simulating a single product instance during
operations, e.g., predictive maintenance.
Here are a few testimonials from SimScale’s customers.
1) “SimScale is an incredible platform. It increases access
to CAE for users of all abilities. It has the potential to
totally change the industry and has the capabilities of
reaching considerably more users. The interface is
incredibly easy to follow and allows to quickly gain a high
level of competence” — Mark Byers, Hydrodynamics
Engineer at Scotrenewables
2) “SimScale’s user-friendly interface simplified the task to
a great extent. Moreover, SimScale’s customer support is
admirably good. The online support and sharing of project
facility is one of the features that separates SimScale from
other CFD software.” — Sujaat Ali, Senior Mechanical
Design Engineer at Larsen & Toubro
3) “The nice thing about SimScale is that you can
essentially run an unlimited number of simulations
simultaneously with no reduction in computational
resources, because SimScale opens up each simulation on
independent nodes. This is a huge advantage for us, because
we are typically under heavy time constraints.” — Daryn
Bertelson, CAE Engineer, Aqseptence Group

Does anyone remember a time before the
Internet? Most of us have seen it, but it’s hard
to recreate it in our mind. It only exists in
long tales which we tell the young, tales of yesteryears
where life wasn't occupied by technology. But we love
technology. And the next evolution of the Internet
would make the current time become another
yesteryear tale. What is this next Internet evolution?
It’s the Internet of Things.
We know that Internet is where we access relevant and
non-relevant information; connect with friends, peers,
companies, and customers; and utilize to conduct our
daily business and activities. So, what is the Internet of
Things or IoT? IoT is when the devices which we use
to connect and interact with Internet talk to each other.
‘Talk’ is exchange data among the devices with a view
to facilitating better solutions and faster processes.

Now, your smartphone can connect to
your television and laptop even when
they aren’t in the same room. You can
sync all your systems so that any
change done at one place would reflect
everywhere else.
“Where to?” Self-driving cars
around the corner!
The true essence of IoT comes out
when it is coupled with machine
learning. Fast forward into a world of
automation where self-driven cars
aren’t fiction. The system in your car
operates the engine, the sensors around
the vehicle, the breaking, and
everything else. It connects to the
cloud, observing the traffic and weather
patterns along the route you are about
to take. It auto adjusts to the passing
vehicles, all the while ensuring the
safety of its passengers.’
There have been some issues with this
as a couple of crashes being reported.
This tech can’t be forced live due to
market pressures as the cost of
mistakes is too high. Once autonomous
cars do hit the roads, they would have
to be perfect. But this isn’t more than a
couple of years away. For now, let’s
look at something that is already
running and showing great results.
‘How do we get there?” Perfect route
optimization is here!
We are used to having the best
products and fastest services. To make
this happen, people and goods must be
constant on the move somewhere or
the other. Be it from the manufacturers
to warehouses or distributors,
distributors to retailers, or directly to
the customer's door, there are a lot of
assets constantly moving.’
How is this logistics movement
managed, tracked, and directed?
Technology, like that of LogiNext,
tracks vehicles through GPS right from
the time they are loaded to the point
they finish their replenishment duties.
Delivery personnel and field agents
such as technicians, supervisors, sales
folks, etc. are tracked using their
smartphones. The agents use our app to
streamline their daily activities and
sync live information gathered on-
ground with their company’s central
system.
This tech is not just the need of the
hour; it’s what keeping the ever-
expanding need for cost-friendly
logistics management in check.
Spiraling logistics costs arising from
increased volume movement with a
growing driver storage. Even the trend
of same day/next day deliveries means
that some vehicles are left
underutilized.
Sensors and trackers, backed by a base
machine learning based system, can
now help managers optimize the
capacities of their vehicles, assign the
right load to the right driver/delivery
associate, and eventually set the best
route devoid of traffic and other
bottlenecks to ensure on-time
deliveries.
Delivery route planning and
optimization, hence, is not just cutting
down costs, but also incentivizing
market evolution. Companies like
Amazon and Walmart can ensure better
customer service with timely deliveries
and end-to-end order tracking. This
helps create value for the customer, the
company, and the economy.
“What's in the box?” Automated
warehousing streamlines it!
With the development of machine
learning backed logistics optimization,
companies are investing in large
distribution centers or warehouses.
Some high-value companies have
already part automated the operations
in these centers. As mentioned earlier,
the sheer increase in the volume of
goods moved nowadays means that the
lead time even at warehouses must be
shortened to the minimum.
If the order must reach a customer in a
day, it can’t really spend about half of
that at the center itself. The entire
sorting and allocation system is
automated. Some companies have even
robotized some mundane functions
within the warehouses.
“Do as I Say” Voice Controlled
Logistics Movement
We are well aware of the latest in
virtual assistants such as Alexa, Siri,
Google Home, etc. It's a handy way to
automate activities around yourself.
You can just ask Alexa to book a cab
while playing your favorite songs.
Google recently demonstrated proper
AI capable bots which could even have
impromptu conversations and book
appointments. The obvious extension
of this came with voice-controlled
logistics management. Using the same
ease of household directions, managers
can automate the planning of delivery
routes, dispatch shipments, tracking
vehicles, etc. using just their voice.
They can talk to the system and do all
of these things.
The idea is simple. IoT is going deeper
and deeper into our lives, not just how
we handle our phones, but also how we
handle our businesses. Above all, we
must remember that it’s only a tool. It's
how we use it that would define our
future.

  • 4. A Surreal Presentation Ensuring Perfection e cannot deny the fact that our precious human world is full of complexities, confusion, and Wchaos. Even the thought of leading ourselves through a chaotic situation is formidable. Imagine, we are around one thousand people in a hospital and it had a wild fire. Our most common reaction will be heading to the safest place we know and save our asses. Hospital authorities will guide you through this mishap but how? Explaining every shit caution verbally to everyone is quite a task, and understanding and acting on instructions ideally in that anarchy is certainly possible on paper, but very difficult to accomplish, isn’t it? To avoid such adversities and slipups, we plan, strategize and execute. Although constructing picture- perfect strategies on paper is commendable but expecting everyone to act precisely by providing them a single paper is comical. For the reason, a bunch of people cannot virtualize the scenario by the same way. If it is about ensuring the perfection in execution then a complete understanding of situation is prerequisite. Then let’s talk about how we can ensure that… I guess by narrowing the possibilities of human error like imagining the scenario in the same way we can ate that rock. But how is it possible, right? Meet simulation. Putting into the typical words the simulation is an imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system. The surreal technologies like virtual modeling and simulation are gaining popularity amongst the business world for their revolutionary approach towards ideation and its visual capabilities. Creating a virtual imagery these technologies explain the concept with more precision and intelligibility. Simulation can be used to show the eventual real effects of alternative conditions and courses of action. The technology has changed perspectives of presentation. The act of simulating something first requires that a model be developed; this model represents the key characteristics, behaviors and functions of the selected physical or abstract system or process. The model represents the system itself, whereas the simulation represents the operation of the system over time.
  • 5. Simulation is used in many contexts, such as simulation of technology for performance optimization, safety engineering, testing, training, education, and video games. Additionally, computer experiments are used to study simulation models. Simulation is also used with scientific modeling of natural systems or human systems to gain insight into their functioning, as in economics. Numerous sectors are exploring the seamless possibilities of the simulation. However, the enormously advanced industries like healthcare, education, automobile, development and training are witnessing the incalculable benefits of simulation in particular. With a vision to voyage into the amazing world of simulation Insights Success brings a distinctive edition of “The 10 Most Trusted Simulation Solution Providers 2018” which highlights the remarkable capabilities and provision of some the world’s best simulation solutions. • 11. Heartwood Inc: We believe critical, complex information should be easy to follow, learn and master. Market Leaders in Virtual Interactive Training The $ Most Trusted Simulation Solution Providers 2018
  • 12. Founded in 2007 at San Mateo, CA, Heartwood’s virtual interactive simulations and guides help operations, maintenance, and field service teams perform complex procedures faster, safer and with less errors. Its visual, 3D interactive and portable applications allow them to practice procedures on equipment virtually via web, PC, mobile, AR and VR platforms. Heartwood’s customers reduce workforce training time by up to 60% and see an ROI of up to 7x. As a market leader, Heartwood supports a strong base of customers and partners including, Apple, Reynolds, Pacific Gas & Electric, Norfolk Southern, Tetra Pak, Komatsu, Audi, Sikorsky, Oshkosh and Raytheon. Leading brands in Manufacturing, Utilities, Energy, Railroad, Heavy Equipment, Automotive, Aerospace and Defense leverage its virtual interactive simulations and guides every day. It is recognized as one of Inc. Magazine’s 500|5000 Fastest Growing Companies, and a “Top Simulation and Training” company. Virtual Interactive Experience Heartwood Inc. offers Virtual Interactive Training (Simulations & Guides) that allows workforce to train anytime, anywhere, on any platform. Instructional information is displayed as 3D interactive content that mirrors the real world in both ‘form’ and ‘function’. Simply put, this means it looks like the real thing, and acts like it. The 3D Interactive applications developed by the company are specifically tailored for Operations, Maintenance (O&M) & Safety. A Tech Enthusiast Raj Raheja is the CEO of Heartwood Inc. He provides a leading voice for the future of 3D Interactivity and Virtual Training technologies. He believes in meshing great technologies together and is passionate when Visual and Interactive technologies are at play. Raj co-founded Heartwood with Neil Wadhawan, and focuses on company vision, culture and new technology development. “I believe in using technology to make jobs easier, faster and safer. And I also believe that we should do it responsibly, not just because it can be implemented. For example, tacking on a VR headset onto an employee with no other training access point and roadmap thought, would just be a science project”, states Raj. He believes, “Our company, based in Silicon Valley – a region committed to innovation – has developed a way to help technical workforce learn complex tasks with 3d interactive technology that is as simple as using any other app – on their tablet, PC, web browser, and yes, AR and VR as well. Training happens in a classroom, on
  • 13. a plant floor, in between job sites and 2 minutes before the task sometimes. We need to be there for the worker all the way.” Raj has been awarded ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ and featured in – Inc. & Entrepreneur magazines, San Francisco Business Times, Silicon Valley Business Journal and more. He has been an invited speaker at Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, Autodesk, Unity and more. He intensely writes about his vision for the industry, the company, his team and founding principles on Heartwood’s well-read blog. Personalized Training Approach Raj has mentioned a study published by Deloitte In 2015, which states that around two million manufacturing jobs would go unfilled between 2018 and 2028, with a potential economic impact of 2.5 trillion. Skilled technical trade positions will go empty because companies will not find trained workers to fill them. However, he believes that at the same time, there is an emerging trend in learning that could be a silver bullet – the shift from Instructor-led training to Student-centered learning. The one-size fits all approach to training may no longer be sufficient. Many companies are moving from “chalk and talk” style delivery to more efficient and effective hybrid learning programs. Unfortunately, sometimes that still results in “Death by PowerPoint”, just that it happens online. There is a lot of reading and seeing, but not much doing. This is where Heartwood steps in. Its 3D Interactive Virtual Training apps allow workforce to practice procedures anywhere, anytime - before they arrive on their shift. This gets them into peak production mode faster and decreases costly ramp-up training. Now workers can learn to operate and maintain equipment using engaging visual apps. There is less need to fly new hires in for training. There’s consistency worldwide. And it’s all done in less time and at scale — so employees are in the field or on the floor working smarter, sooner. Training on Field The initial focus of Heartwood was to fill the gap between costly live training and ineffective passive eLearning. At the core, it existed as a Training & Simulation company. After a decade of Enterprise training deployments in Fortune 1000 companies, the company learned that there is a ton of untapped ROI beyond the classroom or training environment – it’s in the field. It was reducing learning times and travel costs for training sessions, making the investment into its technology certainly worthy, but the real impact was when Heartwood made small gains over high volume. Simply put, reducing training costs was great, but reducing operational costs in the field was the bigger deal. Now its solution is designed to span the lifespan of the worker from Training-to-Field-to-Refresher learning as one cohesive value extended loop. Adversities in Technology According to Heartwood, its biggest challenge by far and also the toughest competition is fighting status quo. Anytime new technology is introduced, especially in the enterprise, there is cautious optimism and a hesitation to Train Faster, Smarter with our ‘Learn-by-doing’ Apps.
  • 14. act. Thankfully that is changing at an unprecedented pace. It is tough to go even a week without hearing some Fortune 1000 company adopting interactive or immersive technologies for training and field service. The company takes the business case approach with its customers, insisting on a minimum of 3 KPI’s (key performance indicators) on the first pilot initiative. That way success, either in cost avoidance or otherwise, can be measured and lays the path for companywide implementation. When the team can’t clearly define that going in, it has even asked the customer to halt and re- think their starting point. Future Aspirations According to Heartwood, Anyone who has a job needs training, and always will. How they will train though – that will change with every technology paradigm shift. The tough part is to first predict where the opportunity is going to be, and second, how dynamic it is. It is undeniable that the worker of tomorrow will be more decentralized, more mobile, and needing information ‘just-in-time’ at the point of use. From a platform perspective, Heartwood is predicting some combination of Tablet+Phone+Wearable and a seamless switch between them. They would all have a similar experience of absorbing content, just different degrees of immersion and end-use. The company is betting on that vision and is planning its solution roadmap accordingly. Cliental Assessments “The owner’s manual is so confusing. It’s almost impossible to mess up when we use your apps. They are something that can be utilized by apprentices and journeymen for years to refresh their skills.” – Pacific Gas & Electric “Confidence & mastery has noticeably improved! Where students seemed uncertain before, you can now see that the person knows what they’re doing.” – Norfolk Southern Railway “The Audi TT simulation is one of the best received WBT modules that we have ever done! Over 15000 dealer folks benefited from the training- and it was a tremendous help in introducing the new Virtual Cockpit Audi technology to our dealer body. I just want to say that you guys have done a great job on the two Audi Virtual Cockpit Simulations. Everyone was very impressed by it. It is featured on the Audi German training website and is available worldwide.” – Manager- Technical and Collision Training, Audi Training and guiding technical workforce - in a visual, interactive, portable manner.

About the Author From Artificial To Authentic AI: ith so much attention focused on Artificial WIntelligence (AI), it’s worth remembering that one size does not fit all. There are specific business-related pain points in mind when a company decides to deploy AI technology, so making the right choices can be a tricky task. For example, several months ago, an AI related breakthrough was announced – a robot learned and demonstrated the ability to perform a perfect backflip. While it is well acknowledged that the invested research and development for this mission was huge and the commercial potential for some applications is enormous, it is somewhat unclear how this specific innovation or the core models and algorithms of it, can serve other industries and verticals. Herein lies the problem. |December 2018|16
  • 19. Gauging AI success in one field in many cases can be meaningless for another. To make things worse, even when trying to go deeper into the technology and attempting to evaluate, for example, which Machine Learning algorithms are utilized by the product, or what are the number of layers in the Deep Neural Network models mentioned by specific vendors, in the end it will be possibly pointless as it does not directly reflect the solution deployment ‘success’ implications. Nevertheless, it seems that the market ignores this reality and continues to evaluate AI-based products by buzzword checklists using familiar and related AI terminology (e.g., Supervised, Unsupervised, Deep Learning etc.). While checklists are an effective tool for comparative analysis it still requires the ‘right’ items to be included. Unfortunately, what typically is absent are the items which are important to the customer, from a problem-solution perspective. Introducing Authentic AI Given all of this, there is a need to change the narrative around AI technology and solutions to something meaningful and authentic that reflects the real-life challenges and opportunities that businesses are facing. This is the time to introduce Authentic AI. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘Authentic’ as both ‘worthy of acceptance or belief as conforming to or based on fact’and ‘conforming to an original so as to reproduce essential features’. This is not about ‘Fake’ to be contrasted with ‘Real’. It’s about the essential features of AI which need to be acknowledged, and hence, redefine the ‘checklist’. Often, these essential ‘authentic’ features are hidden and only surface when a CIO/CDO is faced with a new problem to be solved. This is seen especially when the AI aspects of a proposed product or solution are fully explored by asking questions such as: - Is the AI technology utilized by the product aimed specifically for my problem, optimally (e.g., performance, cost, etc.)? - Is it capable of addressing the complete problem or only a part of it? - Can it be assimilated into the existing ecosystem without imposing new demands? - Can it address the compelling environmental conditions of the problem space? These issues can be grouped into three different ‘classes’ - ‘Original’, ‘Holistic’ and ‘Pragmatic’: Original – How innovative is the solution? This can be quantified by assessing the following: - the invention of new algorithms or even new models and - the use of complex orchestration techniques or - through the capability to handle complex data formats and structures. While there is no need to re-invent the wheel repetitively for any problem, there are distinctive characteristics which require optimizing. Holistic – How complete is the proposed AI technology? It takes into account the capability of handling the end-to-end aspects of the solution, the competence of harmonizing the operation of the various AI components of the solution and the ability to adapt to ever changing conditions of the AI application. Pragmatic – Can the technology solve real world problems in their actual and natural space in a commercially viable way? This means that for example the data sources can be processed in their most native format (both unstructured or structured) as well as provide insights or results matching the pragmatic needs of the specific market expectations. In addition, the ability to be quickly deployed and rapid to act are assessed. All of these elements should be used to systematically assess and evaluate AI-based products and solutions to assess their authenticity and therefore effectiveness in specific use cases. For example, many home-loan mortgage evaluation and recommendation systems utilize a somewhat isolated machine learning based applicant classification method, one of many other processes included within the solution. The AI in this solution cannot be considered Authentic AI to a high degree as it ‘scores’ low on the ‘Original’ and ‘Holistic’ classes as it isn’t innovative ‘enough’ (from an AI sense). In addition, the AI component itself does not cover on its own the end-to-end aspects of the solution (hence affecting the overall performance and precision). It could be considered to be ‘Pragmatic’ to some level if it can handle the required data sources of financial institutions or the customer applications natively, and if the solution ‘output’ are the explicit results required as a specific recommendation (e.g., loan conditions). However, the deployment timeline (time-to-market) and commercial aspects need to be evaluated as well. This is just one example of many others, covering all kinds of variations. Perfect backflips may grant you a gold medal if you are a gymnast but if you are a master chess player don’t expect a winning move. |December 2018| 17 Maestros Insights

With each slippage of time, the technology is upgrading so does the robotics. The advancements in robotics field will be a boon to the enterprises in order to increase growth and productivity rate. There are certain parameters that should be considered while implementing robotics in the enterprise, such as Following up Parameters before Reaching the Depth of Robotics Modifying; as per the user’s need Generally, robots used to require advanced training in order to operate comfortably. It’s not an issue for the big enterprises as they acquire the skilled people to deal with, where the small enterprises are not so gifted with loads of assets initially. But, with the new advances in robotics technologies, it has become easier for small ventures to invest in robots for increasing the productivity generating more revenue. Just by giving wireless commands from an IOT, demonstrating tasks to the robots gets easier. Nowadays, there are numerous varieties of robots to carry out multitasks, thus as per the user’s need, one can invest in robots for the industrial purpose. Easily Compatible Unlike the big manufacturing robots in huge industries, there are various collaborative robots which are specially designed to work alongside and to assist human workers in a variety of tasks. Earlier it was sort of stressful for an enterprise to allot specific man-power for certain task, but by implementing co-bots such issues are resolved. As the size and shape of co-bots are getting more compact, it may benefit the enterprises in various terms. • 28. sector, robotics is still unaffected. From past few years, the technology, as well as its implementation, has increased substantially. Have a look on such few areas for possible applications. Obliging Enterprises through Robotics Cobot’s: Assisting Humans Unlike big manufacturing robots, collaborative robots are designed to work with employees in enterprises and corporates. The design is smart enough to assist humans and also, compact enough to handle. Generally, the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are slightly boon by implementing co-bots in day to day life, as they are easily adaptable, easy to process and most importantly it’s affordable. According to some experts, there’s a possibility of enormous growth in the business, if Co-bots are implemented widely. The main motive of industrial robots is to the prioritized safety of employees and workers, yet the chances of accidents are always at high risk. Whereas, co-bots works as a service robot; they come in various shape and sizes easing the workability and reducing the liability of employees. In order to get sanctioned as service robots, any co-bot has to pass certain testing parameters by robot manufacturing companies, factors such as easily compatible with other devices and programs, safe in use, easy to command, and processing at a faster rate. Currently, co-bots are used for processes like machine tending, packaging, and material handling. In spite of industries, co-bots are used in various sectors such as in farming, hospitals, healthcare and facilities, and labs. It does come under robot-as-a- service format. Cloud Robotics Imagine an enterprise with robots that are totally independent to the user commands, in other words, no external programming may require in order to process robots for the various tasks. In accordance to that, a User Interface to be exact might not be needed in the future, as machine learning is already on its verge to get explored. Currently, in order to carry out certain tasks robots are been told to what to do using the interface whereas, cloud robotics directly twitch compatible code from the clouds which are required for the tasks. To work alongside with humans, robots must be deep learning the subjects simultaneously able to point out problems and provide solutions right away. Meanwhile, it will be a boon for the enterprises if the employees will get to interact with robots as a personified object rather than a machine. Soon, there with personal robotics cloud which will help robots to take and give information directly. Depending on the robot, it can process various functions such as lifting, leveraging, handle vision, object recognition and other, thus certain robots acquire such skills and will provide information to the cloud. Then, this information helps other robots to get enlightened. In simple words to say, robots will teach other robots for the better good of the enterprises. On the other hand, as robots are getting more and more evolved, filtering of essential information from rest will get much easier. This will comfort both big and small enterprises to manage big data more precisely. With the emergence of advancement in robotics, they are on the verge to touch skies already. If considering the above possible factors, this evergreen era of robotics is less likely to get saturated due to technological disruption. As the technologies are growing faster, the enterprises must to catch-up with them accordingly. It’s high time to implement new technologies especially of the robotics as its utilization is not only subjected to warehouses but also, towards the in- house enterprise work. Hopefully, there’s a possibility of robot-oriented industries in the future. |December 2018|26

  • 39. The logistics and supply chain management industry is one that is constantly evolving and optimizing, and because of the competitive nature of the industry, innovation is key for success. Modern technologies have not only aided in the streamlining of supply chains and company processes, but have also set the industry on a technologically advanced path that many could not have even imagined fifteen or twenty years ago. From robotics in warehouses and autonomous ships and trucks, to computerized shipping and tracking, technology has changed the industry for the better and has provided new levels of visibility. With the aid of technology, supply chains of the future may be a bit more complex, but will certainly be more efficient and less expensive. A few of the technological advancements that have changed the game for the logistics and supply chain management industry are: Computerized Shipping and Tracking Modern technology has drastically impacted the shipping industry and has made for more efficient and accurate tracking. With a wide array of different supply chain management software programs on the market, logistics and supply chain professionals and their clients are able to keep an eye on their shipments during every step of the supply chain journey. With every second being crucial in the world of supply chain management, the ability to provide complete transparency to clients in terms of where their packages are and when they will arrive is something that is extremely valuable. Computerized shipping and tracking has also largely reduced the amount of time spent shipping, receiving, tracking packages and compiling shipment data, as all necessary data can be stored in one easy-to-access place. And in this case, saving time means saving money. Being able to digitally organize data and monitor shipping and tracking information also reduces the opportunities for human error. With digital records there is no longer a worry that sloppy handwriting or a misplaced piece of paper will throw a wrench in a shipment being delivered on time, or to the right place. “Futuristic” Autonomous Vehicles A big technological push in the industry right now is the advancement of autonomous vehicles, electrification, use of solar power, and energy storage, all of which will be used across the board to both reduce cost and increase efficiency. Right now, energy and transportation make up more than half of total supply chain costs and labor accounts for a little less than a third of costs. With further technological advancements, the transportation and labor aspects of supply chains will eventually cost very, very little compared to what they do today. The eventual implementation of autonomous electric vehicles, which can be programmed to use the most efficient routes and run throughout the night without a driver, will drive down the cost of labor and increase capacity on the roads. Autonomous vehicles will also address the growing concern of truck driver shortages throughout the industry. Also on the very near horizon is the use of autonomous ships. Autonomous ships would address the issues of piracy, talent shortage in the ocean shipping industry and accidents caused by human error. Big Data Logistics and supply chain management professionals live and die by data. A recent study by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals shows that 98 percent of third-party logistics firms and 93 percent of shippers feel that data-driven decision making is key to supply chain activities. Technological advancements have made it extremely easy to gather and analyze key pieces of data. Data surrounding shipping times, cargo weight, weather patterns, traffic routes, and more can lead to greater transparency, optimized routes, greater reliability and automated supply chains. Having a team that is able to accurately interpret big data is key to success, and will likely save a company both time and money. There is a reason UPS drivers don’t make left turns. Someone on the UPS team analyzed large amounts of data, which is now available thanks to technology, and determined that eliminating the majority of left turns would use 10 million less gallons of fuel, emit 20,000 tonnes less carbon dioxide into the air and help deliver 350,000 more packages every year. Technology is something that is hard to predict and often difficult to wrap your head around, but the logistics and supply chain industry is benefiting from every new technological advancement in our field. The supply chains that we are working with today will be drastically different in five or ten years’ time, and almost unrecognizable in twenty or thirty years. Technology has made supply chain management more efficient, transparent and cost-effective. It is important to have members of your team that are willing to embrace new ways of doing things and that are able to stay up-to-date on new forms of technology. This industry is constantly changing, and in order to be successful you need to be willing to change along with it. |December 2018| 37 Mentor’s Opinion

  • 48. Does anyone remember a time before the Internet? Most of us have seen it, but it’s hard to recreate it in our mind. It only exists in long tales which we tell the young, tales of yesteryears where life wasn't occupied by technology. But we love technology. And the next evolution of the Internet would make the current time become another yesteryear tale. What is this next Internet evolution? It’s the Internet of Things. We know that Internet is where we access relevant and non-relevant information; connect with friends, peers, companies, and customers; and utilize to conduct our daily business and activities. So, what is the Internet of Things or IoT? IoT is when the devices which we use to connect and interact with Internet talk to each other. ‘Talk’ is exchange data among the devices with a view to facilitating better solutions and faster processes. • 49. Now, your smartphone can connect to your television and laptop even when they aren’t in the same room. You can sync all your systems so that any change done at one place would reflect everywhere else. “Where to?” Self-driving cars around the corner! The true essence of IoT comes out when it is coupled with machine learning. Fast forward into a world of automation where self-driven cars aren’t fiction. The system in your car operates the engine, the sensors around the vehicle, the breaking, and everything else. It connects to the cloud, observing the traffic and weather patterns along the route you are about to take. It auto adjusts to the passing vehicles, all the while ensuring the safety of its passengers.’ There have been some issues with this as a couple of crashes being reported. This tech can’t be forced live due to market pressures as the cost of mistakes is too high. Once autonomous cars do hit the roads, they would have to be perfect. But this isn’t more than a couple of years away. For now, let’s look at something that is already running and showing great results. ‘How do we get there?” Perfect route optimization is here! We are used to having the best products and fastest services. To make this happen, people and goods must be constant on the move somewhere or the other. Be it from the manufacturers to warehouses or distributors, distributors to retailers, or directly to the customer's door, there are a lot of assets constantly moving.’ How is this logistics movement managed, tracked, and directed? Technology, like that of LogiNext, tracks vehicles through GPS right from the time they are loaded to the point they finish their replenishment duties. Delivery personnel and field agents such as technicians, supervisors, sales folks, etc. are tracked using their smartphones. The agents use our app to streamline their daily activities and sync live information gathered on- ground with their company’s central system. This tech is not just the need of the hour; it’s what keeping the ever- expanding need for cost-friendly logistics management in check. Spiraling logistics costs arising from increased volume movement with a growing driver storage. Even the trend of same day/next day deliveries means that some vehicles are left underutilized. Sensors and trackers, backed by a base machine learning based system, can now help managers optimize the capacities of their vehicles, assign the right load to the right driver/delivery associate, and eventually set the best route devoid of traffic and other bottlenecks to ensure on-time deliveries. Delivery route planning and optimization, hence, is not just cutting down costs, but also incentivizing market evolution. Companies like Amazon and Walmart can ensure better customer service with timely deliveries and end-to-end order tracking. This helps create value for the customer, the company, and the economy. “What's in the box?” Automated warehousing streamlines it! With the development of machine learning backed logistics optimization, companies are investing in large distribution centers or warehouses. Some high-value companies have already part automated the operations in these centers. As mentioned earlier, the sheer increase in the volume of goods moved nowadays means that the lead time even at warehouses must be shortened to the minimum. If the order must reach a customer in a day, it can’t really spend about half of that at the center itself. The entire sorting and allocation system is automated. Some companies have even robotized some mundane functions within the warehouses. “Do as I Say” Voice Controlled Logistics Movement We are well aware of the latest in virtual assistants such as Alexa, Siri, Google Home, etc. It's a handy way to automate activities around yourself. You can just ask Alexa to book a cab while playing your favorite songs. Google recently demonstrated proper AI capable bots which could even have impromptu conversations and book appointments. The obvious extension of this came with voice-controlled logistics management. Using the same ease of household directions, managers can automate the planning of delivery routes, dispatch shipments, tracking vehicles, etc. using just their voice. They can talk to the system and do all of these things. The idea is simple. IoT is going deeper and deeper into our lives, not just how we handle our phones, but also how we handle our businesses. Above all, we must remember that it’s only a tool. It's how we use it that would define our future. INTERNET OF INTERNET |December 2018| 47
