9
WHAT IS BLOCKCHAIN?
A blockchain is a magical immutable
record-keeping system. Immutable means
unchangeable, which means all records
written in the blockchain are unalterable and
accessible, forever.
The core of the system is a magic ledger, a
record-book. The magic links each line in the
book with the previous line, and also links
each page with the previous page, such that
if the book has been tampered with, it would
be very obvious to everyone.

International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved.
10
WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN?
This magical immutable record-keeping
system is a distributed ledger, literally.
More copies of the ledger makes the records
more trustworthy than if just one person controls
the record-keeping system through one ledger.
And the more people that have a copy, the more
trustworthy the records are, because bribery of
ledger holders or other forms of collusion is more
difficult.

International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved.
11
WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN?
The magic of the ledgers also helps people
synchronise their ledgers.
When a new record is made, the magic decides if
it is valid or not before adding to the official
record, and makes it prohibitively expensive for
non-valid records to be added.
So, not only can everyone have the same records
within a short amount of time, everyone can
easily check if their records are valid or not.

12
WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN, REALLY?
Replace the following:
•“magic” with cryptography (where the ‘crypto’ term
comes from)
•“people” with computers, run by individual or
corporate persons
•“lines” with digital transactions
•“pages” with digital blocks
•“links between lines and pages” as digital chains
and reimagine the “ledgers” not as physical books,
but digital ledgers, or “databases” (hint: they are not,
but use this analogy for now), and that is what
blockchain is:
a type of immutable distributed ledger technology,
and a tool for helping parties to interact without
requiring full trust with each other.
© 2016-2019 Hong Kong Blockchain Society for the
International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved.
13
WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN, REALLY?
This also implies no central control—
otherwise the parties would have to trust
this de facto authority—
hence blockchain applications are called
“decentralised applications”.

14
WHAT IS NOT BLOCKCHAIN
BLOCKCHAIN ≠ BITCOIN
Bitcoin is the first application of blockchain… Bitcoin is not blockchain.
BLOCKCHAIN ≠ CRYPTOCURRENCY
Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have dominated the discussion of blockchain
for the last several years, but now that the bubble has bursted, it’s clear
that many blockchain associations are market-focused cryptocurrency
associations rather than focusing on the application of blockchain itself.
BLOCKCHAIN ≠ DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING
Distributed computing has been around since the 1960s, but it cannot
solve the double-spend problem without relying on centralised control.
BLOCKCHAIN ≠ DATABASE
Databases are not blockchains, because their records can be changed or
destroyed, unlike the records on a blockchain, which can never be
changed nor destroyed. A blockchain reflects changes in state by adding
new records.

International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved.
15
BLOCKCHAIN ≠ DATABASE
1. No Trust or Low Trust
2. Cannot decide on Intermediary
3. Centralised storage is a bad idea

Why this order? Does it matter?
What matters is that the narrative
flows like a “story” so feel free to
add or remove and reorder as you
see fit to present your “story”
What if I remove a section?
Some stories are better told with
different [section] titles or sections
altogether! White papers are
evaluated based on the narrative
and supporting material. Do not
force your story into this example
outline if it doesn’t fit!

Vision One line about your end state vision
Sector The relevant industry
Team Briefly describe the team’s background (beyond resume snippets). What are the key strengths of the group?
General
Description
This is the most important part of the application. What is the idea? Why write this application? What do you find interesting? What pain points do the
products/services address? How would value be created?
Blockchain
Assess Fit. Is blockchain technology essential for the product/solution? How can blockchain technology provide a better solution than an alternative,
established technology? What aspects of the technology are particularly useful?
Market Size Assess the landscape for this idea's products and services. Define its addressable market and explain the size of this market(s).
Partners
Who are the major players in the space? What companies can you potentially work with? Are there partners or consortiums to collaborate with? Is the
industry receptive to blockchain technology?
Competition
Describe the competitive environment. Who are the main competitors? How would they compete with you? What are the issues/opportunities impacting all
players in this market?
Revenue
Model
How can the idea make money? Describe the business model in more depth. What are the components of a potential product offering? What are the
economics of these products? How capital intensive is the model? Do these economies change with the scale of the company?
Distribution
Channels
How could the company acquire new customers or clients? What are the channels through which the company could sell? How effective are these channel
partners? How would these relationships be managed? Would they be externally or internally managed? What do the economics of these look like? How can
the company represent itself in the marketplace (sales & marketing)?
Merits
Make a recommendation; voice your opinion. What is the most compelling reason(s) for exploring this idea further? What excites you about it? What is the
upside in terms of impact? Financial inclusion? Scalability? Profitability? Provide the two or three key reasons why your idea should win the competition.
Risks
Sanity check the idea. In your opinion, what are the potentials risks the company might face? Competition? Poor revenue model? Are there regulatory
considerations? Does the idea require a "big bang" change to existing infrastructures, processes, or market conventions? Did you account for interim or
migratory states (i.e. a transition period for your customers)? What are the key barriers from getting this idea into production? This is not meant to be a
laundry list of risks, just identify and describe the two to three biggest threats to consider.
Next Steps
What are potential next steps to take the idea further? Where could this idea go? Which areas would you like to investigate or build upon more? What
further resources would you need?
THANK YOU

  • 9. © 2016-2019 Hong Kong Blockchain Society for the International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved. 9 WHAT IS BLOCKCHAIN? A blockchain is a magical immutable record-keeping system. Immutable means unchangeable, which means all records written in the blockchain are unalterable and accessible, forever. The core of the system is a magic ledger, a record-book. The magic links each line in the book with the previous line, and also links each page with the previous page, such that if the book has been tampered with, it would be very obvious to everyone.
  • 10. © 2016-2019 Hong Kong Blockchain Society for the International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved. 10 WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN? This magical immutable record-keeping system is a distributed ledger, literally. More copies of the ledger makes the records more trustworthy than if just one person controls the record-keeping system through one ledger. And the more people that have a copy, the more trustworthy the records are, because bribery of ledger holders or other forms of collusion is more difficult.
  • 11. © 2016-2019 Hong Kong Blockchain Society for the International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved. 11 WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN? The magic of the ledgers also helps people synchronise their ledgers. When a new record is made, the magic decides if it is valid or not before adding to the official record, and makes it prohibitively expensive for non-valid records to be added. So, not only can everyone have the same records within a short amount of time, everyone can easily check if their records are valid or not.
  • 12. © 2016-2019 Hong Kong Blockchain Society for the International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved. 12 WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN, REALLY? Replace the following: •“magic” with cryptography (where the ‘crypto’ term comes from) •“people” with computers, run by individual or corporate persons •“lines” with digital transactions •“pages” with digital blocks •“links between lines and pages” as digital chains and reimagine the “ledgers” not as physical books, but digital ledgers, or “databases” (hint: they are not, but use this analogy for now), and that is what blockchain is: a type of immutable distributed ledger technology, and a tool for helping parties to interact without requiring full trust with each other.
  • 13. © 2016-2019 Hong Kong Blockchain Society for the International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved. 13 WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN, REALLY? This also implies no central control— otherwise the parties would have to trust this de facto authority— hence blockchain applications are called “decentralised applications”.
  • 14. © 2016-2019 Hong Kong Blockchain Society for the International Blockchain Olympiad. All rights reserved. 14 WHAT IS NOT BLOCKCHAIN BLOCKCHAIN ≠ BITCOIN Bitcoin is the first application of blockchain… Bitcoin is not blockchain. BLOCKCHAIN ≠ CRYPTOCURRENCY Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have dominated the discussion of blockchain for the last several years, but now that the bubble has bursted, it’s clear that many blockchain associations are market-focused cryptocurrency associations rather than focusing on the application of blockchain itself. BLOCKCHAIN ≠ DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING Distributed computing has been around since the 1960s, but it cannot solve the double-spend problem without relying on centralised control. BLOCKCHAIN ≠ DATABASE Databases are not blockchains, because their records can be changed or destroyed, unlike the records on a blockchain, which can never be changed nor destroyed. A blockchain reflects changes in state by adding new records.

Does it matter? What matters is that the narrative flows like a “story” so feel free to add or remove and reorder as you see fit to present your “story” What if I remove a section? Some stories are better told with different [section] titles or sections altogether! White papers are evaluated based on the narrative and supporting material. Do not force your story into this example outline if it doesn’t fit!

What are the key strengths of the group? General Description This is the most important part of the application. What is the idea? Why write this application? What do you find interesting? What pain points do the products/services address? How would value be created? Blockchain Assess Fit. Is blockchain technology essential for the product/solution? How can blockchain technology provide a better solution than an alternative, established technology? What aspects of the technology are particularly useful? Market Size Assess the landscape for this idea's products and services. Define its addressable market and explain the size of this market(s). Partners Who are the major players in the space? What companies can you potentially work with? Are there partners or consortiums to collaborate with? Is the industry receptive to blockchain technology? Competition Describe the competitive environment. Who are the main competitors? How would they compete with you? What are the issues/opportunities impacting all players in this market? Revenue Model How can the idea make money? Describe the business model in more depth. What are the components of a potential product offering? What are the economics of these products? How capital intensive is the model? Do these economies change with the scale of the company? Distribution Channels How could the company acquire new customers or clients? What are the channels through which the company could sell? How effective are these channel partners? How would these relationships be managed? Would they be externally or internally managed? What do the economics of these look like? How can the company represent itself in the marketplace (sales & marketing)? Merits Make a recommendation; voice your opinion. What is the most compelling reason(s) for exploring this idea further? What excites you about it? What is the upside in terms of impact? Financial inclusion? Scalability? Profitability? Provide the two or three key reasons why your idea should win the competition. Risks Sanity check the idea. In your opinion, what are the potentials risks the company might face? Competition? Poor revenue model? Are there regulatory considerations? Does the idea require a "big bang" change to existing infrastructures, processes, or market conventions? Did you account for interim or migratory states (i.e. a transition period for your customers)? What are the key barriers from getting this idea into production? This is not meant to be a laundry list of risks, just identify and describe the two to three biggest threats to consider. Next Steps What are potential next steps to take the idea further? Where could this idea go? Which areas would you like to investigate or build upon more? What further resources would you need?
